Fun at the Pond

“Hey Midge!” called Jake as he entered the front yard at her house. “Where are you hiding? I don't see you.”
Jake stood in the front looking around and no Midge. “Hey Midge!” called Jake again. He walked to the back of the house and poked his head through the doggie door. “Hey Midge! Are you in there?”
Everything was quiet. He crawled into the house and hurried to the living room. “Hi Snappy,” said Jake.
“Hi Jake,” greeted Snappy. “What are you doing?”
“I was looking for Midge,” said Jake. “Where is she?”
“Our owner took her to the vet this morning,” said Snappy.
“Was Midge sick?” asked Jake.

Ride the Merry-go-round

“Hey Midge!” called Jake as he hurried through the front gate to the yard. “Midge, where are you?”
“I'm here,” sang Midge. “What are you doing?”
“Do you want to go to the zoo again?” asked Jake.
“I want to go ride the merry-go-round,” said Midge.
“We can't get into the amusement park,” said Jake.
“They have a small carnival now at that new little town,” said Midge. “I saw it when my owner took me for a ride with her last night before we went to bed.”
“They don't have it fenced in?” asked Jake.
“No,” smiled Midge. “We can walk right in.”
“But they will catch us,” said Jake. “They always do.”
“We can try,” said Midge. “I want to ride the horses on the merry-go-round.”

Funny Town named Tombstone

“Hey Jake,” said Midge. “Look at the funny doors on that one. We can crawl under it.”
“The sign on the building says Tombstone Saloon,” said Jake.
“What is a saloon?” asked Booker-T. “Is that one of those things my owner goes to and gets her hair done?”
“No,” said Jake. “That is a salon.”
“What do they do in a saloon?” asked Midge. “Do they sell tombstones for the cemetery?”
“I think Tombstone is the name of this town,” said Jake.
“That is a funny name for a town,” laughed Booker-T. “Sounds like you are living in a cemetery.”
“What do they do in a saloon?” asked Midge. “Lets go look inside. We can just crawl under the door.”
They saw two people walk into the saloon. “That door swings,” said Booker-T. “Lets go look inside.”
They walked to the saloon and stood under the swinging door and looked around inside. “Oh wow,” said Midge. “It is a place to eat and drink something. Think we can go in and get something to eat. I'm hungry.”
“How would we pay for it,” said Jake. “We don't have any money.”
“I don't know,” said Midge. “Lets go inside and see what they are eating.”
“Looks like a bunch of old wood tables and chairs in here,” said Booker-T. “Look at the long counter over there and all those bottles behind it.”
“I think they call that a bar,” said Jake.
Midge started laughing.
“What is so funny Midge?” asked Booker-T.
“I remember something from a movie my owner was watching,” said Midge. “and it was so funny.”
“What?” asked Jake.
“Something about your belly up to the bar,” laughed Midge. “Why do they want to put all those bellies on the bar. That would be hard to do.”
“I don't know,” said Jake. “ We could jump up onto the bar and lay down and then our bellies would be on the bar.”
“That's funny,” Laughed Booker-T. “Lets go see what the other buildings are.”
They walked outside and looked around the little town. “Look Jake,” said Midge. “No one has their doors shut in this town.”
“Do you see any of those tourists they talked about?” asked Booker-T.
“They said this was going to be a tourist town,” said Midge. “So maybe all these humans walking around are tourists.”
“Maybe,” said Jake. “They look like regular humans.”
“Hey look at that barn over there,” said Booker-T. “We can go into the barn.”
“It says Livery Stables on the sign,” said Jake.
“ Well,” said Midge. “I know what a stable is I think. Isn't that a place where horses are?”
“Yes,” said Jake.
“But what is this Livery,” said Booker-T. “They have funny buildings in this town.”
“I never hear of Livery,” said Jake. “Must have something to do with horses. I don't know.”
“Lets go see what is inside,” said Midge. “The big doors are opened.”
They hurried inside and stood near the door and looked around the room. “Hey Jake,” said Booker-T. “There are some fake horses over there.”
“Why do they have fake horses?” asked Midge. “Did the real horses not want to live here?”
“They have that fake horse hooked to that real wagon over there,” laughed Jake. “Do the humans think that fake horse is going to pull the wagon?”
Midge raised her eyebrows and started laughing. “Humans are funny. They should be as smart as we are.”
“But they can talk and we can't talk,” said Booker-T.
“We are talking,” said Jake. “Don't you hear us talking?”
“But the humans don't understand when we talk,” said Midge. “We are smarter because we hear each other talking and we hear the humans talking. They aren't too smart because they can hear
each other talking but don't hear us.”
“Maybe Livery Stable is a place for fake horses,” suggested Booker-T.
“Maybe,” smiled Midge. “Lets go see what the other buildings are.”
“Look Midge,” said Jake. “It is a gift store.”
“Do they have gifts for dogs and cats?” asked Booker-T. “Lets go see.”
They hurried across the street and stood in the doorway of the gift store. There were many things in it and lot of people walking around in it.
“There is no room to walk in there,” said Jake. “Too many tourists in one spot. How do they move around?”
“Look over there,” said Midge. “It's a jail. Wonder if any tourists are in jail. Lets go see.”
They hurried over to the jail and walked inside. Sitting at the desk was a stuffed man with a star on his shirt. “They must not have too many arrests in this town,” said Jake. “That sheriff isn't real.”
“This is a really strange town,” said Booker-T. “How does anyone live here?”
“I think this is a fake town,” said Midge. “Why do they want a fake town?”
“Maybe that is what a tourist town is,” said Jake.
“Hey Jake!” called Gabby as he flew down and landed on the ground next to Midge. “What are you guys doing?”
“Hi Gabby,” said Midge. “We are looking around at this funny town. “It is all fake.”
“They do have real food here and gifts,” said Jake.
“But they have fake horses,” laughed Booker-T. “They won't get too far trying to ride a fake horse.”
“It is just for show,” said Gabby.
“What show?” asked Jake.
“It is to show people how they lived in the old west days,” said Gabby. “Tourists like that kind of stuff.”
“Tourists are funny if they like fake stuff,” laughed Midge.
“It has a strange name too,” said Booker-T. “I don't think I want to live in a town called Tombstone. I would feel like I was living in a cemetery.”
“There really is a Tombstone town,” said Gabby.
“Can we go see it?” asked Midge.
“It is too far away from here,” said Gabby. “It is too far for me to fly.”
“Why is this a tourist town?” asked Booker-T. “If they can't live here.”
“It is to show people how the people of the old west use to live many years ago,” said Gabby.
“Little sad,” said Midge.
“Why is it sad?” asked Gabby.
“They had fake horses,” said Midge.
“Ha ha ha,” laughed Gabby. “You are so funny.”
“I'm hungry,” said Jake. “Lets go find something to eat.”
The three started walking back to Jake's house with Gabby flying above them.
"We will come again another day," said Midge.

Snappy's New Friend

Hey Midge!” called Booker-T as he poked his head through the doggie door. “I'm coming in wherever you are.”
“Come on in,” smiled Midge as she entered the kitchen after hearing Booker-T call out. “Com say hi to Snappy. He will be happy to see you.”
Booker-T followed Midge to the living room and leaped into one of the chairs next to the table where Snappy's tank home sits.
“Hi Snappy,” greeted Booker-T as he pressed his nose against the tank.
“Hi Booker-T,” replied Snappy. “What are you doing this morning?”
“I came in to see you,” said Booker-T. “It's been a long time since I came in to see you. We miss you at the park pond.”
“I'm happy to see you too,” smiled Snappy. “I see Midge every day. Do you like my new home?”
“You have a new home?” asked Booker-T.
“See it?” asked Snappy. “Our owner got me a little bigger one with a really nice pond for me to play in. I really like it. She is so nice.”
“It looks really nice Snappy,” said Booker-T. “I didn't notice it was bigger. Do you miss the pond at the park?”
Sometimes I miss playing with you guys,” said Snappy. But I am in a safer place now and the weather is much better here.”
“Winter is too cold for a little guy like you, Snappy,” said Midge. “Here you stay warm all the time. No season changes.”
“What are you guys going to do today/” asked Snappy.
“I think we are going to the new little town Gabby told us about,” said Booker-T.
“You are going to another town?” asked Snappy. “How are you going to get there?”
“We will walk,” said Midge.
“Is it very far from our town?” asked Snappy.
“Not far at all,” said Booker-T. “It is inside our town.”
“Wow,” said Snappy. “A town inside a town. Where is it?”
“Someone built a little town of old buildings for tourists and we want to go see it,” said Midge. “We want to see what a tourist looks like.”
“Have you ever seen a tourist before?” asked Snappy.
“I don't know,” said Midge. “Maybe we did and maybe we didn't. We might have seen one and didn't know it was a tourist.”
“How will you know if you see one?” asked Snappy.
“I don't know,” sighed Booker-T. “How will we know if we see one, Midge?”
“Maybe a tourist is an alien from another planet who will come to live in the little town or maybe it is some kind of strange animal that some humans have.”
“Do you think the humans will have the tourists on a leash?” asked Booker-T.
“I hope so,” said Midge. “They might be dangerous.”
“Who might be dangerous?” asked Jake as he entered the room.
“Hi Jake,” greeted Midge.
“I didn't see you outside,” said Jake. “So I came inside to see if you were in here. Who might be dangerous?”
“We were talking about seeing a tourist,” said Booker-T.
“Do you think they might be dangerous?” asked Midge.
“I never saw a tourist,” said Jake. “I don't know if they are or not. I don't even know what they look like.”
“Maybe the humans will have them on leases,” suggested Midge. “Or maybe they are aliens from another planet and they came here to live in that little town.”
“Hi Snappy,” said Jake. “Sorry I forgot to say hi when I came in. Did you get a new home? It looks bigger to me.”
“Our owner set it up for me last night,” smiled Snappy. “Do you like it?”
“It looks really nice,” said Jake.
“I have a new friend too,” said Snappy.
“Do you have another little Ant in there?” asked Booker-T.”
“Where is your new friend?” asked Jake as he pressed his nose against the glass. “Is he in there with you?”
“Tiny!” called Snappy. “Come out and meet my good friends. Don't be scared.”
From under the rocks, a small little green turtle crawled out to join Snappy on the large branch.
“They are really big,” said Tiny. “They don't look like you and I.”
“They are different,” said Snappy. “But we are all friends. They used to come swim in the park pond with me until Midge got her owner to give me a nice home when it was really cold outside.”
“Hi Tiny,” smiled Midge. “I'm Midge and this is Jake and that's Booker-T in the chair.”
“It is really nice you have a little friend to play with,” said Jake. “How did he get here?”
“Our owner brought him home last night when she got me the bigger tank,” said Snappy. “Now you can come visit me and Tiny. And I won't be lonely when you are all out there playing.”
“We will come back again to visit,” said Booker-T.
“Are you going to look for the tourists at the little town now?” asked Snappy.
“Yes,” said Jake. “Do you and Tiny want to come along? I can pull you in the wagon if you want to come with us.”
“Thanks,” said Snappy. “But we will stay here. You can tell us all about the tourists when you come home.”
“We will do that,” agreed Midge. “Come on Jake and Booker-T. Lets go check out this new little town and try to find some tourists. I want to see what they look like.”
“See you later guys,” said Snappy.
“Bye,” said Jake as the three of them hurried through the kitchen and out the back doggie door.
“How will we know if we see a tourist, Jake?” asked Midge. “We don't know what they are?”
“I don't know,” said Jake. “Maybe Gabby knows what they are.”
“Is Gabby going to come to the little town?” asked Midge.
“I think so,” said Jake.
“Hey Jake!” said Booker-T. “Is that the town over there?”
“I think so,” said Jake. “Lets go into the town.”
They hurried across the street and stood staring at all the buildings and all the people walking around.
“Okay,” said Midge. “Lets go in.”
