Midge poked her
head out of the doggie door and looked around the back yard. The
yard was covered in a white blanket of snow.
“Oh,”
thought Midge. “I guess it snowed all night.”
She ran out to
the back of the yard to take care of business and hurried back inside
to the warmth of the house. In the living room she leaped into the
chair near Snappy's tank.
“Hi Snappy,”
said Midge.
“Hi Midge,”
greeted Snappy. “What are you doing?”
“Everything
is white outside Snappy,” said Midge. “I think it snowed all
night long.”
“Winter
isn't over yet,” said Snappy. “Don't you like the snow?'
“I like
Snow,” said Midge. “But I do like the warm weather better. It
was nice for Christmas and the New Year with no snow. Now I guess
old man winter is back.”
“Winter is
a man?” asked Snappy.
“Not
really,” said Midge. “I think it is a season. I head our owner
call it old man winter when she was talking to someone on the phone.”
“What do
they call summer?” asked Snappy. “Old lady summer?”
“I don't
think they call summer anything but hot,” laughed Midge.
“Hi Midge,”
called Jake as he entered the room. “Did you see all the snow?”
“Yes,”
said Midge. “It is really cold out there too.”
“Do you
want to go play in the snow?” asked Jake.
“Can we
ride the trash can lids on the hill again?” smiled Midge.
“You want
to try that crazy thing again?” asked Jake.
“Sure,”
replied Midge. “What else can we do in all this snow?”
“We could
make snow angels,” said Jake.
“Our snow
angels don't look much like angels,” said Midge. “the humans
made better angels. I want to build a snowman.”
“Same
problem as making snow angels,” said Jake. We only have feet and
no hands to roll the snowballs with and stack them.”
“You know
what I wish for Jake?” asked Midge.
“What's
that?” asked Jake.
“I wish I
could fall asleep and wake up with two feet and two hands,” said
Midge.
“Then you
would be a human,” said Jake.
“Wouldn't
that be really cool,” smiled Midge. “I just want to be a human
for a day.”
“I think
you need a fair God-mother for that to happen.” laughed Jake.
“Do you
know where we can find one?” asked Midge.
“Only in
your dreams, Midge,” said Jake. “And in the stories.”
“God-mothers
aren't real?” asked Midge.
“God-mothers
are real real, said Jake. “ But not the fairy ones.”
“I guess
we have to stay dogs,” sighed Midge.
“It's okay
Midge,” said Jake. “We have fun being dogs, don't you think?”
“I guess
we do,” smiled Midge. “Now lets go slide down the hill on the
trashcan lid.”
“Okay,”
agreed Jake as they crawled outside into the snow and ran to
Booker-T's house.
“Come on
Booker-T,” shouted Midge.
“Where are
we going?” asked Booker-T.
“Sledding,”
said Midge.
“On the
trashcan lid,” added Jake.
“I guess
you call that lidding,” laughed Booker-T. “We have an old
trashcan in the back yard so we can use the lid from it. Lets go.”
Jake grabbed
the lid and they all started walking to the hills near the school.
“This is
going to be fun,” smiled Booker-T as they started to climb the
hill.
“You go
first Booker-T,” said Midge.
“Going
sledding, going sledding,” sang Booker-T.
“You are
worse than Midge,” laughed Jake.
Booker-T
just smiled and climbed onto the middle of the lid. “Push!”
Jake and
Midge pushed against the lid and it started down the hill. Round and
round it went as it sailed down the hill.
“Booker-T!”
screamed Jake. “Look out! You are going to hit the tree.”
Just before
the lid hit the tree, Booker-T umped off the lid and landed on his
back in the snow. Jake and Midge ran down the hill to where he
landed. He sat up and was laughing. “ That was fun! Now it is
your turn.”
Just as Jake
went to grab the lid and pull it back up the hill, some boys came by
and took the lid.
“Oh, Jake,”
said Midge. “they took our lid.”
“I guess we
can't ride it now,” said jake.
“That wasn't
very nice of them,” said Booker-T.
“They didn't
know we were playing with it and we had no way to tell them it was
ours,” said Jake. “Lets go home and come back another time.
Maybe later, they will leave the lid laying here and we can get it
again.”
“Okay,
Jake,” said Midge.
The three
slowly shuffled along in the snow and went to Jake's house. Along
the way they stopped to watch some kids making a snowman. “They
are making a different looking snowman,” said Midge,
“That's not a
snowman,” said Jake. “They are making a snow dog.”
“Wow,”
said Booker-T. “That is cool. It's different.”
“I like
that,” said Midge. “A snow dog. Isn't that cute.”
“I'm cold,”
said Booker-T. “Lets go to the house and warm up.”
They finished
their walk to the house and went inside to warm up.
