They Are Here

 

Midge walked to Booker-T's house next door and as she entered the gate into the yard, she saw Booker-T coming around the house from the back yard.

“Hi Booker-T,” greeted Midge. “Are you ready to go to Jake's house?”

“Lets go Midge,” smiled Booker-T.

They strolled along the sidewalk on their way to Jake's house. Suddenly Midge saw something in the sky that glistened. She stopped and stared at the sky.

“What is wrong, Midge?” asked Booker-T.

“Look up there,” said Midge. “See that?”

Booker-T looked around the sky and spotted the shiny object that Midge pointed at.

“Wow, Midge,” said Booker-T. “What do you think it is?”

“It's the space aliens!” said Midge. “They are here!”

“What are they doing up there?” asked Booker-T.

“Maybe looking for a good place to land,” suggested Midge.

“Lets hurry to Jake's house,” said Booker-T.

“Keep your eyes on that object,” said Midge. “We don't want to lose it.”

“If it lands somewhere, we might not know where,” said Booker-T. “We might lose it.”

“No Booker-T,” said Midge. “I will keep watching it. Lets hurry to Jake's house.”

They hurried along the sidewalk with Midge trying to watch where she was going and keeping an eye on the shiny object in the sky. It slowly floated in the air.

“Do you think it sees us?” asked Midge.

“Maybe,” said Midge. “Maybe it is going slow so they don't lose us.”

“Why are they following us?” asked Booker-T. “Do you think they will take us into space with them?”

“I don't know,” said Midge. “Do you want to go into space?”

“I don't know either,” said Booker-T.

The two were watching the shiny object and Midge forgot to watch where she was going. Booker-T hurried through the gate at Jake's house and Midge ran into the fence.

“What are you doing?” asked Booker-T.

“I forgot to watch where I was going,” sighed Midge.

They walked to the porch and found Jake napping on the swing and Lucy just came and followed them through the gate.

“Hey Jake!” called Midge. “Wake up!”

“What are you doing?” asked Jake. “I was taking a nice nap.”

“You are always napping,” laughed Booker-T.

“They should have named you Sleepy Head instead of Jake,” said Midge.

“What is wrong Midge?” asked Lucy.

“Do you see that space ship up there?” asked Midge.

Lucy stood and looked around the sky, but saw nothing. “I don't see anything up there Midge.”

Midge looked around the sky and also saw nothing.

“Where did it go?” asked Midge. “Did you see where it went, Booker-T.”

“No,” sighed Booker-T. “I forgot to keep watching it.”

“What was it?” asked Jake.

“They are here,” said Midge.

“Who is here?” asked Jake.

“She thinks the space aliens are here again,” smiled Booker-T. “You know Midge. She wants to meet a space alien.”

“Where did you see a space alien?” asked Lucy.

“I didn't see a space alien,” said Midge.

“I thought you said they were here?” asked Jake.

“I did,” said Midge. “I saw their space ship flying around the sky. Booker-T saw it too.”

“You saw it too?” asked Lucy.

“I saw something,” said Booker-T.

“What did it look like?” asked Jake.

“It was shiny,” said Midge. “It was flying around the sky and it followed us to your house.”

“Are you sure?” asked Lucy.

“I saw it!” said Midge. “I really did.”

“She did see it,” agreed Booker-T. “I saw it too.”

“You are looking for little green men,” laughed Booker-T.

“Maybe they are orange,” said Midge. “We don't know what color they are.”

“I like orange,” laughed Booker-T.

“Where did you see it last?” asked Jake.

“It was over that house,” pointed Midge. “It was flying around that blue house.”

“Lets go for a walk,” said Lucy. “Maybe we will see it somewhere.”

“Okay,” said Midge. “Come on, come on. Lets go so it don't get away.”

The four of them walked through the gate and started to walk up the street toward the blue house.

“Do you see anything?” asked Midge.

“No,” said Jake. “We just started walking. We might have to walk into some of the back yards to see if it landed in one.”

They reached the blue house and walked to the back yard.

“Look Jake,” said Midge. “There it is!”

“That is really small,” said Lucy. “They must be tiny space aliens.”

“Maybe the space aliens come from a place of tiny humans,” suggested Midge.

“Maybe they aren't humans,” suggested Booker-T.

“I don't think they are anything,” said Jake.

“Why?” asked Midge.

“If they are space aliens,” said Jake. “I don't think they are human. Do you know any human who is that small to fit into that space ship?”

“I don't know any,” said Lucy.

“Me either,” said Booker-T.

“I guess I don't either,” said Midge.

“Maybe it is a little ship the space aliens sent out to see what we look like,” said Lucy.

“I think that's right,” said Jake. “This is just a little space ship to see if we are friendly before they come out.”

“Maybe,” said Midge.

As they sat under the tall shade tree, they heard the back door of the blue house open and a little human walked out into the yard. He walked over the space ship and picked it up and took it into the house.

“Who was that?” asked Midge.

“That is my neighbor,” said Jake.

“He took the space ship,” said Lucy. “Why?”

“Because it is his toy,” laughed Jake.

“You knew that?” asked Booker-T.

“Yes, I did,” said Jake.

“You let us think there were space aliens,” said Midge.

“You did too, didn't you,” laughed Jake. “Don't worry, Midge. I bet they are out there somewhere and one day you might meet one.”

“Lets go back to your house,” said Lucy.

They turned and walked back to Jake's house feeling a little disappointed that it wasn't a real space ship.
