The Little Ducklings

Midge sat on the front porch looking at the rain falling all around. Booker-T ran through the rain and jumped onto the porch with Midge.

What are you doing?” asked Booker-T.

Sitting here watching the rain,” said Midge. “Do you like to play in the rain?”

Sometimes,” said Booker-T. “Maybe it will stop raining later.”

Maybe,” said Midge. “Have you heard the rain song?”

What rain song?” asked Booker-T.

Rain rain go away,” sang Midge. “Come again another day. Little Midge wants to play.”

That's a good one,” smiled Booker-T. “I don't think the rain is listening to you,”

I know,” sighed Midge. “I've sung it three times this morning and see it is still raining.”

Do you want to run in the rain to Jake's house?” asked Booker-T.

We will get really wet,” said Midge.

Never mind,” said Booker-T. “Look over there. Here comes Jake and Lucy running along the sidewalk.”

Jake and Lucy ran through the gate into the yard and leaped onto the porch and stood shaking off the water.

Hey!” said Midge. “Wow you are wet!”

I know it,” laughed Jake. “It is raining out there.”

We were just talking about running in it to your house,” said Midge.

Well, we beat you,” said Lucy. “We came to your house.”

I know,” said Booker-T. “And you got wet.”

Hey look over there,” said Midge.

Where?” asked Jake.

Over there on that street,” said Midge. “See all the ducks swimming in the water.”

Oh no,” said Jake. “Lets go help the ducks.”

Don't they know how to swim by themselves?” asked Booker-T.

They do,” said Jake. “But the water is flowing hard and the drain place is down that way.”

Hurry!” shouted Midge as she took off running down the sidewalk toward the ducks.

Jake got in front of the drain and Midge helped to pull the little ducks out of the water and set them on the sidewalk. Midge looked up and saw a mother duck running along the sidewalk toward them

Thank you,” said the mother duck. “I thought my babies were going to go down the drain.”

You are welcome,” smiled Midge. “Jake ran to block the drain and Lucy, Booker-T and I pulled them out of the water. I'm Midge.”

I”m Daisy,” said the mother duck. “I was taking the little ones to the pond in the park when they jumped in the water and it was moving too fast for them.”

The pond in the park is a long way to go,” said Jake. “Can the little ducklings walk that far?”

I think they are okay,” said Daisy.

We can take them in the wagon, Jake,” suggested Midge.

Sure,” said Jake. “ We can do that.”

Do you want to ride in the wagon to the park?” asked Lucy.

That would be helpful,” said Daisy. “Do you mind taking us?”

No,” said Midge. “We can play when we get to the park too.”

Maybe we can swim a little with the ducks,” suggested Booker-T. “The rain is not as heavy now.”

Wait here,” said Midge. “I will go get the wagon from the back yard.”

Midge ran around the house to the back and picked up the wagon handle and started pulling to toward the gate. On the sidewalk, Jake gently picked up each duck and placed it into the wagon. He put in the last one when one of the others jumped out. He hurried and picked it bad up and set into the wagon. Daisy jumped onto the wagon and told her little ducklings to stay in the wagon.

Sit down and they will pull the wagon to the park where we can swim in the pond,” said Daisy.

The little ducklings sat quietly while Jake picked up the handle and started to pull the wagon. Daisy kept the little ducklings quiet as they rode to the park. Behind the wagon, came Booker-T, Lucy and Midge. They entered the park and as they came close to the pond, all the little ducklings jumped out the wagon and ran to the pond. They jumped in and and splashed around the water.

Come on in the pond,” invited Daisy as she leaped in with the little ones.

Jake ran and jumped into the pond, followed by Midge, Booker-T, and Lucy. The little ducklings flapped their little wings, splashing water on the new friends.

They are having a lot of fun in the water,” smiled Lucy. “Will you stay in the park now?”

This will be our new home,” said Daisy. “Thank you for helping us to the park.”

It is nice here at the park,” said Midge. “We come to play in the pond sometimes too.”

The little humans used to play in the pond sometimes too,” said Jake. “But they are building them a small swimming pool now so the pond is now used for ducks, turtles, birds and fish now.”

Thank you again for saving the little ducklings from the drain,” said Daisy.

We are happy to do it,” smiled Midge. “And we made a new friend.”

I'm happy to be your new friend,” said Daisy.

They all swam and played together for a couple hours before Jake, Midge, Lucy and Booker-T told Daisy they were going home.

See you later,” said Midge. “Bye Daisy.”

Bye all,” said Daisy as she waved to them as they walked away.
