Jake, Midge and
Booker-T sat on the front porch at Midge's house talking about what
they wanted to do that morning. Gabby flew down from the trees and
landed on the table.
"What are
you guys doing?" asked Gabby.
"We were
talking about what to do today," said Midge. "What are you
doing?"
"Do you
want to do something with us?" asked Jake.
"I was
flying around the town and guess what I saw?" asked Gabby.
"A space
alien," said Midge jumping up and was excited.
"No alien,
Midge," said Gabby. "The space aliens haven't landed yet."
"Are you
still looking for space aliens?" asked Booker-T.
"I know
they will come one of these days," said Midge. "I just
know they will."
"Well, I
didn't see any today," said Gabby. "There is a carnival
coming to town tomorrow."
"What is
a carnival?" asked Booker-T.
"It has
lots of rides and games," said Gabby.
"But we
have a big park with rides and games," said Midge.
"Why do
we need more rides and games?" asked Jake.
"This is
a traveling carnival," said Gabby. They take their rides and
games from one town to another town. After about a week, they will
pack up and leave to go to another town."
"Can we
go Jake?'asked Midge. "I want to ride the rides."
"You can
get into the carnival easier than the big park," said Gabby.
"There is no fence around it."
"We can
sneak in there easier," said Booker-T. "No fence so they
can't keep us out."
"Maybe
we can," said Jake. "I like the rides too."
"Where is
the carnival going to be?" asked Midge.
"School
is out for a week right now," said Gabby. "They are
setting it up in the field near the school and people can park their
cars in the school parking lot."
In two days,
Jake, Midge, and Booker-T walked to the school to check out the
carnival. In the big field near the school, they saw a large ferris
wheel, a small roller coaster and several other rides. Along one
side of the carnival rides, they saw many booths where they had games
to play. At one end of the carnival they saw a bit house and the
sign above the door said 'Fun House.'
"What is
the fun house, Jake?" asked Midge. "Can we go inside and
have fun?"
"I don't
know what it is," said Jake. "Lets go see."
"Maybe
it is a house you go in and have fun," said Midge. "I like
to have fun."
They crossed
the carnival grounds weaving in and out of the crown of people going
to this fun house.
"Ouch!"
yelled Booker-T.
Midge stopped
and turned around. "What happened?" asked Midge.
"That kid
stepped on my foot," said Booker-T.
"Are you
okay?" asked Jake.
"I think
so," sighed Booker-T as he limped to where Midge was standing.
They hurried to
the fun house and looked around to see if anyone was watching them.
No one was there so they sneaked in with a group of people.
"Jake!"
said Midge. "What's happening? The floor is moving."
The kids
were laughing and some were falling down. Midge was looking around
as they tried to walk across the moving floor. They got to the other
door and went through it.. In the next room they saw a big barrel and
it was rolling round and round. Kids were walking through it and
some were slipping down to the floor.
"Do we
have to go through that?" asked Booker-T.
"I
think so," said Jake. "Come on lets go."
As they
started through the barrel, Midge stopped and she found herself being
rolled up the wall and then she slid to the bottom. "Hurry!"
said Midge as she ran out the other end. Jake and Booker-T were
laughing as they ran through and joined her.
They walked
through another door and found themselves looking at a bunch of
mirrors.
"Hey
Jake," called Midge. "Look at me. I'm fat!"
"Over
here Midge," said Jake. "I'm tall and skinny."
"Why do
we look funny in these mirrors?" asked Booker-T.
Kids were
laughing at how they looked in the strange mirrors.
They walked
around the room looking at themselves in each mirror as they made
their way to the exit door.
"That's
a funny place," said Booker-T.
"I like
the funny mirrors," laughed Midge. "We looked so funny in
them."
"That
was fun," said Jake.
"Lets go
try and ride one of the rides now," said Booker-T.
The three
walked around the carnival looking for a good ride to try. They
waited for their chance and jumped into the roller coaster car. As
the coaster started up the first hill, the young man running the
controls saw them sitting in the last car. He brought the coaster
backward and made them get out. They got out of the car and sat down
to watch it go around with the people inside.
"I
don't think they are going to let us ride," said Jake. "Lets
go home."
The three
watched the coaster as it came back in and stopped. They turned
around and started walking home. "We will try tomorrow,"
smiled Jake.
