Something New at the Farm

Midge, Jake and Booker-T walked along the sidewalk on their way to the farm. They crawled under the fence and ran across the field on their way to the barn. Gabby was sitting on the fence near the barn waiting for them.

"Hey Gabby," said Midge as she looked around the yard. "Where are all the cows?"

"They are all in the barn," said Gabby.

"Is it time to milk the cows?" asked Booker-T.

"No," said Gabby. "They are all visiting their new friend in the barn."

"Who is it?" asked Jake.

"It is a little pig," said Gabby.

"Is it a pot belly pig like Pinky?" asked Midge.

"No," said Gabby. "It is a baby rescue pig."

"What is a rescue pig?" asked Booker-T.

"I think it fell off another farmer's truck and one of the cows rescued it from the street and took it into the barn to help it," said Gabby. "It was hungry and they got it something to eat."

"That was nice," smiled Midge. "It is always nice to help another animal."

"Lets go see the baby pig," said Jake as he started to walk into the barn.

"Hi everyone," said Midge as they entered the barn to see the cows all standing at the back of the barn.

They hurried to the back of the barn.

"Hi Betsy," said Jake. "Gabby said you rescued a baby pig."

"Yes," said Betsy. "It was laying on the side of the road near the barn."

"Was it hurt?" asked Booker-T.

"No," said Millie. "It was just scared and hungry so Betsy brought it to the barn and put it here in the corner stall.

"Maybe the farmer is looking for it's baby pig," suggested Midge.

"I don't know," said Betsy.

"Does your owners know it is here?" asked Jake.

"Yes," said Millie. "He was at the barn this morning. I heard them talking and they said they were going to put an ad in the paper so maybe the owner will see it and come to get the baby pig."

"It is so cute," smiled Midge. "Even Booker-T is bigger than the baby pig is."

"Does it have a name?" asked Booker-T.

"We asked him and he don't know," sighed Betsy.

"Oh," said Jake. "That is sad not to know your name. "Maybe the momma pig didn't give it a name yet.
"Or maybe he don't remember," suggested Booker-T. "It is so tiny."

"What are you guys doing?" asked Betsy.

"Midge wanted to go ride the roller coaster at the amusement park," said Jake. "But they made her get off the ride when she tried to ride so we came here to see how you are all doing."

"You want to ride the roller coaster?" asked Milly. "What is a roller coaster?"

"It is a little train that goes fast on a track that goes up and down and around," said Jake. "She wants to go fast in the little train."

"That sounds scary," said Betsy. "I think I like my four feet on the ground."

"Me too," laughed Jake. "Midge wants to do what the humans do all the time."

"But she isn't a human," said Milly. "Why do you want to do what the humans do?"

"Our owner is always working hard," said Betsy. "I don't want to do what he does."

"What does your owner do?" asked Booker-T.

"He rides on that big tractor over there," said Betsy.

"Wow," said Midge. "That would be fun."

"He drives it and pulls some kind of thing on the back that cuts the grass in that big field," said Milly. "He puts hay in the top of the barn and always has to clean out the messy stalls in the bottom of the barn and spread clean straw. We stand and watch him but it looks like a lot of hard work."

"Twice a day, he has to milk all us cows," said Betsy. "He has to make sure we have food to eat and he feeds the horses and the chickens."

"He works a lot," said Jake. "Would you like to do what he does?"

"I don't think so," said Midge. "I would get really tired."

"Me too," said Booker-T. "I like just being a cat and having fun with you guys."

"Do you have fun, Betsy?" asked Midge.

"We just stand around and watch everyone," said Betsy. "What can we cows do for fun?"

"Do you run around the field chasing each other?" asked Booker-T.

"Sometimes we run a little," said Milly.

"I don't like to run," said Betsy. "It is too hot in the summer to run."

"Can you run and catch a ball?" asked Midge.

"We don't know what a ball is," said Milly. "What is a ball?"

"The humans like to throw the balls and we go run after them and bring them back to the owners so they can throw it again," said Jake. "But sometimes the humans get tired before we do."

"What do you do for fun?" asked Betsy.

"We walk to the park together and swim in the pond when the little humans aren't in the water," said Booker-T.

"Sometimes we go to the little zoo building and talk to the animals there," said Midge.

"Sometimes we try to do what the humans do," said Jake. "Because Midge likes to try them."

"I like to have fun," said Midge.

"I think it is fun talking to you," said Betsy. "It is nice that you come to visit us on the farm."

"I like the farm," said Jake. "I think it would be fun to live on the farm."

"Me too," said Midge.

"It has a really big yard to play in," laughed Booker-T. "And you have a big barn to play in."

"I think it's time for us to walk back home now," said Jake. "I'm hungry."

"You are always hungry," laughed Midge.

"Come to see us again," said Milly.

"Okay," said Midge. "We will."
