Midge crawled out
her doggie door and hurried to Booker-T's house. As she entered the
yard, she called out to him. “Booker-T!” called Midge. “Where
are you? Are you still sleeping?”
“I'm awake,”
replied Booker-T as he crawled through his doggie door and met Midge
outside. “what are you doing?”
“Let's go to
Jake's house,” said Midge.
“What do you
want to do today?” asked Booker-T.
“I want to do
something that is fun,” said Midge. “Humans always have lot of
fun and I want to do something fun too.”
“Maybe Jake
can think of something fun,” suggested Booker-T as they walked
along the sidewalk going to Jake's house.
“He always
wants to do things to be careful,” said Midge. “I want to do
something fun and risky, don't you?”
“Risky isn't
good, Midge,” said Booker-T.
“Well we
could do something risky and fun and still be careful,” suggested
Midge.
“Jake
doesn't want you to get hurt, Midge,” said Booker-T. “I don't
want you to get hurt either.”
“Humans do
it,” said Midge.
“But humans
can do the human things and we are just animals with 4 feet and no
hands,” said Booker-T.
“I know,”
sighed Midge. “But we are smart too, just like the humans are,
don't you think so?”
“We are
smart,” agreed Booker-T. “But we aren't built the same as humans
so they can do things we can't do.”
“What can
they do that we can't?” asked Midge. “Explain.”
“Well,”
said Booker-T. “They can ride a motorcycle because they have two
legs with feet and two hands to hold onto the handlebars.”
“There must
be something that we animals can do that humans can't do,” said
Midge.
“Well, lets
see,” said Booker-T. “Can they eat a bone?”
“Maybe not,”
smiled Midge. “I think those hard bones would break their teeth if
they tried to eat them. So we can eat bones and they can't. I think
they can do a lot more things than we can do.”
Booker-T and
Midge entered Jake's yard and found him sitting on the porch swing.
“What are you
two talking about?” asked Jake.
“We were
talking about what kind of things we do as animals that humans can't
do,” said Midge.
“I think most
of the things we can do,” said Booker-T. “The humans can do them
too.”
“I think you
are right, Booker-T,” said Jake. “The only thing I can think of
right now is we can eat bones and they can't.”
“That's what
I said,” smiled Booker-T.
“I guess that
is why humans are better than we are,” sighed Midge. “But I
really like to try and do what they do. They do a lot of fun things,
Jake.”
“Do you
remember all the fun we had last year?” asked Booker-T. “Trying
to do what humans do?”
“It was fun
wasn't it?” asked Midge. “Maybe we can try some of them again.”
“Like what?”
asked Jake raising his eyebrows.
“I want to
slide down the big slide at the water park again,” said Midge.
“You must
have forgotten about the security guard who chased us out of the
park,” said Jake.
“They haven't
opened the park for the summer yet, Jake,” said Midge. “Maybe
the guard isn't there yet.”
“I don't
think there is any water in the pond in the park yet,” said
Booker-T.
“Did you see
that little horse in the back yard at your neighbor's house?” asked
Midge.
“That's a
rocking horse for the little boy over there,” said Jake.
“Lets go
ride it,” said Midge.
“You can't
ride it,” said Jake. “Your feet won't touch the ground.”
“I can sit
on the top and you can make it rock,” suggested Midge. “I will
rock it for you to ride on it, Jake.”
“Okay,”
said Jake. “lets go try it out.”
They ran
across the street and Midge jumped on the rocking horse. Jake pushed
on it to make it rock, but he did it too fast and Midge flew off
the back of the horse. She lay on the ground with her feet in the
air.
“Midge!”
screamed Jake. “Are you okay?”
“I'm okay,”
said Midge as she rolled over and stood up.
They looked
over at Booker-T and he was laying on the ground laughing. “That
was really funny,”
laughed Booker-T. "See there, you can fly better than Gabby. You flew backwards."
laughed Booker-T. "See there, you can fly better than Gabby. You flew backwards."
Midge and
Jake looked at each other and started laughing with him..
“I think we
better find something else to do,” said Midge.
