The Halloween Witch

Midge stood behind her owner as she answered the front door and standing on the porch was about 10 little humans all dressed in strange looking outfits... Midge's eyes got big when she saw the funny and scary looking humans. She stood back from the door as her owner gave each one a piece of candy. The door shut and Midge stared up at her owner and then ran to the bedroom and in a few minutes came running back to the living room with her head stuck in a blouse from the laundry basket. She stood up on her hind legs and waved her front paws at her owner begging for a treat. Her owner laughed and patted her on the head.

"Come on Midge," said the owner as she started to walk to the kitchen with Midge following behind.

The shirt sleeve was too long and Midge kept tripping on the sleeve as she walked. In the kitchen, her owner got her box of doggie treats out and gave Midge a couple of them.

"You are funny, Midge," laughed her owner.

The doorbell rang again and they hurried to the door. When her owner opened the door, there stood a big ugly witch all dressed in black carrying a black cauldron. She had warts on her nose and a big black hat. In the other hand, she carried a crocked broom. Midge stood back and hid behind the coffee table as she peaked around the end of it. Suddenly from the front door came a horrible cackling sound.

Midge ran out the back door and hurried around the house and peaked around the corner of the house toward the front porch. There she saw the witch still standing on the porch. She sat down and kept watching as the witch strolled toward the gate.

"Hey!" said Gabby.

Midge jumped and quickly turned to find Gabby sitting behind her. "You scared me," said Midge.

"Are you scared?" asked Gabby.

"Did you see that witch?" asked Midge. "She was scary."

"Halloween is fun for the little humans," said Gabby. "I like all the funny costumes."

"Costumes?' asked Midge. "What costumes?"

"The funny clothes they are wearing," said Gabby.

"That witch wasn't funny," said Midge. "It was scary. She looked like a real witch with her broom."

"They have some pretty scary costumes too," said Gabby. "I like the funny ones. Did you see the space alien?"

"Did the space aliens land?" asked Midge. "I knew they would come one day."

"No," laughed Gabby. "The space aliens haven't landed. I saw three little humans dressed up like little space aliens walking on the sidewalk."

"Maybe they were real," suggested Midge. "I know they are going to come one day. Maybe with all the little humans dressed funny, they came to see us."

"Did you see them?" asked Gabby.

"No," said Midge shaking her head. "Maybe I was hiding when they came to the door. Where did you see them?"

"They were walking around near the park," said Gabby.

"Are they coming this way?" asked Midge. "I want to see them."

"I don't know where they are going?" said Gabby.

Booker-T ran through the front gate and joined Midge and Gabby at the corner of the house. "What are you doing? Are you hiding?"

"Did you see that scary witch out there?" asked Midge.

"I saw it when it came to our front door," said Booker-T. "When my owner opened the door, it scared me. I ran into the bedroom and hid under the bed."

"I hid behind the table and then ran out here and peaked around the corner to see what it was going to do," said Midge.

"I like all the funny little humans looking like clowns, fairies, cowboys, and I even saw a little space alien," said Booker-T.

"Was the space alien real?" asked Midge.

"I don't think they were real," laughed Booker-T.

"Why are these little humans dressed funny and going to the house?" asked Midge.

"They are going trick or treating," said Gabby.

"What is trick or treating?" asked Midge.

"They go to the houses to get treats and if the people don't give them treats, they will trick them with something," said Gabby.

"Do all the people give them candy?" asked Midge.

"I think most of them do," said Booker-T.

"Can we go do this trick or treating thing?" asked Midge. "I like candy."

"I don't think we can do this," said Gabby.

"I want to try," said Midge. "We can go to the door and when the big human opens the door, we could stand up on our hind legs and beg for candy."

"I don't think it would work," said Gabby.

"Come on," said Midge. "Lets go try at that house on the other side of your house Booker-T."

"We don't have one of those costumes," said Booker-T.

"Come on Booker-T," said Midge. "I want to try."

Booker-T followed Midge through the gate to the sidewalk and Gabby followed above them. When they got to the house and walked to the porch, Gabby pushed the doorbell and when the door opened, Midge and Booker-T stood there on their hind legs begging for some candy.

"Look mommy," said a little human standing next to his mom. "It's Booker-T from next door."

The big human reached out and patted Booker-T and Midge on the head as she laughed at them begging for a handout.

"I think he wants a treat mommy," said the little human. "Is he doing trick or treat?"

"No," said the big human shaking her head. "Dogs and cats don't know anything about trick or treat."

Midge danced around the porch on her hind legs and the little human stepped in front of the big human and held his hand out to the Booker-T and Midge with a piece of candy. They took the candy and ran out of the yard.

"I like this treat or trick thing," smiled Midge. "Can we do it all the time?"

"It is called Trick or treat," said Gabby. "It only is done once a year. You can't do it every day."

"Oh," sighed Midge as she ate her little piece of candy.

"Lets go home," said Booker-T. "We can sit on your front porch and watch for those space aliens."
