Happy New Year

“Jake!” called Midge as she hurried up the walkway to the porch. “Well, how are you this wonderful new year?”
“Hi Midge,” greeted Jake. “The year really flew by, don't you think?”
“I know,” said Midge. “I think I remember when 2015 showed up and now we are starting 2016 today. Wow.”
“Where is Booker-T this morning?” asked Jake.
“He went somewhere last night with his owner,” said Midge. “I think his owner went to visit with her brother and took Booker-T with her so he wouldn't be at the house alone.”
“That was nice,” said Jake. “Did your owner have a New Year's Eve party last night?” asked Jake.
“She had a few friends in and they laughed and ate pizza and watched a couple movies that one of her friends brought to the house,” said Midge. “She has some nice friends. They all patted me on the head and said what a cute dog I was.”
“That's true,” smiled Jake. “You are a cute dog if I say so myself.”
“Thanks Jake,” said Midge blushing. “You always say the nicest things you know.”
“You are the cutest little dog I know,” laughed Jake. “And now we go into the new year and maybe you will have some new ideas for mischief we can get into.”
“Oh Jake,” said Midge. “I will have to think on it for a while. There must be something we haven't tried yet and maybe we can try this new year.”

“You still have to find a way for us to go to the zoo across town you know,” said Jake.
“Oh yes,” said Midge. “We have to wait til they start running that train to the zoo. I think it is supposed to go around the town when it is ready.”
“I think so too,” said Jake. “My owner's sister was telling her that it is supposed to have several stops as he travels around the little town. To shopping center and the zoo and some other places. I just don't know how you will get us on the train without someone seeing us.”
“I will find a way,” said Midge. “You know I always do.”
“I have to agree with that,” said Jake.
“What are you agreeing to Jake?” asked Gabby as he flew down and landed on the railing of the front porch.”
“Hi Gabby,” greeted Midge. “He was agreeing that I always find a way to do something I want to do.”
“Where is Booker-T this first day of the new year?” asked Gabby.
“He went somewhere with his owner last night,” said Midge. “He will be back tonight”
“Did you all have a really nice Christmas?” asked Gabby.
“We did,” said Jake. “How about you Gabby?”
“Polly and I flew over to the zoo and visited some bird friends we have there,” said Gabby. The zookeeper treated them with some special treats for the day.”
“That's good,” said Midge. “Glad you had a good day. We wondered about you that day.”
“Now we have a brand new year for all kinds of fun and frolic,” smiled Gabby.
“What is frolic?” asked Midge.
“Hmmmm,” said Gabby. “You know, I have no idea what it is. I hear people all the time saying someone is frolicking or they are going to have lot of fun and frolic.”
“I don't know what it is either,” said Jake.
“Have you ever seen anyone doing frolic?” asked Midge.
“I don't know what it is so how would I know if they were doing it or not?” asked Gabby.
“I guess that is true,” said Midge. “If we don't know what it is, we wouldn't know if the people were doing it or not.”
“Does it always go with fun?” asked Jake.
“I don't know,” said Gabby. “I always hear the word used with fun, so maybe it is part of having fun.”
“Do you think we frolic when we are having fun?” asked Midge.
“Maybe,” said Jake. “We don't know what it is so maybe we are frolicking and don't know it.”
“Do you have any new ideas for the new year?” asked Gabby.
“We want to get on the new little train and ride it around to the zoo when the station opens,” said Midge.
“Midge wants to rid the train,” corrected Jake. “I just go along for the ride in whatever she comes up with to do.”
“But we always have fun Jake,” said Midge.
“We do have fun,” said Jake. “But a couple times I was afraid you were going to get hurt with your little stunts.”
“What little stunts?” laughed Midge.
“Well,” said Jake. “For starters, how about that time you tried to fly and jumped off the hill and landed flat on your stomach?”
“That hurt too, you know,” said Midge.
“That's because dogs don't fly Midge,” laughed Gabby. “Only us birds fly.”
“I thought the feathers would help me,” said Midge.
“You are too heavy for the feathers to hold you up there in the air,” said Jake. “You have to leave the flying to Gabby.”
“I guess so,” sighed Midge. “It sure looks like fun soaring around up there in the air.”
“True,” said Jake. “It does look like fun.”
“Hey,” said Gabby. “Do you think that is frolicking?”
“You flying is frolicking?” asked Midge.
“Maybe,” said Jake. “Since we can't fly, maybe flying is like doing frolic and we don't know it because we can't fly.”
“Well, it could be,” smiled Midge. “Gee Gabby, you frolic all the time and didn't know it.”
“Do you think that is what doing frolic is?” asked Gabby.
“It sounds like a good thing to call it,” said Midge. “Every day you go frolicking.”
“I want to frolic too,” said Midge.
“We already decided that you can't fly so if doing frolic is flying,” said Jake. “You and I can't frolic.”
“That's sad,” said Midge. “I was really hoping we could frolic and have some fun.”
“No,” said Jake. “We will just have to settle for having fun and no frolic.”
“Okay,” said Midge. “We will find other ways to have fun. I'm sure I will have some good ideas for the new year.”
“I am sure of it,” laughed Jake. “You little mind is always working.”
They all laughed and and agreed to have a great new year..
