Gabby Whistles a Tune

Midge awoke early and ran down the stairs to check on Gabby and Snappy. She jumped into the big chair and poked her nose over the edge of the tank.
“Hi Snappy,” greeted Midge. “How are you this morning?”
“Hi Midge,” said Snappy. “I am good. I just love the warm water your owner gives me to swim in. It really feels good. I like it here.”
“Me too,” said Gabby as he poked his head out of the basket. “It is so nice of your owner to take care of us for the winter.”
“I know,” said Midge. “She is a good person. You will be here alone when I go to Jake's this morning. Will you be okay til I get back?”

Gabby the Injured

It wasn't long and Midge heard the car drive into the driveway and park near the house. Midge and Gabby hurried to the kitchen where Midge let Gabby out the door to play his part. She ran for the living room when she heard the front door open. Midge greeted her owner at the front door, jumping up and down and wagging her tail, when she stepped into the house.
“Hi girl,” said Midge's owner, as she patted her on the head. “I am happy to see you too. Let me get my coat off and get some hot coffee and I will fix you something to eat.”

Gabby Wants a Favor

The friends were all playing at the pond and Gabby was sitting on a tree limb that was in the pond watching them running around to keep warm. Gabby sat shivering on the limb.
"Gabby," said Midge. "Why don't you come over here by the tree and get warm in these pile of leaves."
"It would be warmer than sitting out there in the pond on that limb," said Booker-T.
"Okay," said Gabby as he flew to the leaves and landed in the middle of them close to the tree.
"Is that better Gabby?" asked Midge.
"It should be a little better," said Jake. "It is out of the wind. The wind is cold."
"Yes," said Gabby. "This is better. Midge, can I ask a favor of you?"
"Sure Gabby," said Midge. "We are friends and you can ask me anything and if I can do it, you know I will."
"Thanks Midge," said Gabby. "You are a good friend. I'm happy we are friends."
"Me too," said Midge.
"We are all good friends," said Jake.
"I agree," said Booker-T. "I never thought I would be friends with a bird and couple of dogs."
"We are different," said Gabby.

Gabby Checks on Snappy

"Good morning Snappy," called Midge as she leaped into the chair beside the tank where Snappy was sleeping.
Poking his little head out of the covered area of the tank, he stretched and greeted Midge. "Good morning Midge."
"Did you sleep good Snappy?" asked Midge.
"It was nice a warm," said Snappy. "I slept all night and wasn't shivering at all last night. This is so nice."
"I'm glad you like it," said Midge. "My owner is a good person."
"I hope when spring comes she will let me go back to the pond in the park," said Snappy. "It is really nice there in the Spring and Summer. The winter's are the bad time."

Midge and Her Idea

“Why don't you follow me home,” suggested Midge. “Maybe if my owner saw you in the yard, she would bring you in and make you a warm place to stay for the winter.”
“Oh that would be nice,” said Snappy. “Do you think she would give me a warm home for the winter. I don't think I would want to be in there in the summer. I like it out here in summer.”
“We can try Snappy,” said Midge. “She is good person for a human.”
“Come on with us,” said Jake. “I'm cold and ready to go home and warm up inside.”
“Me too Jake,” said Midge. “Come on Snappy. We will walk slow so you can keep up with us.”
The three friends started across the park toward the street. Snappy hurried behind Midge and tried to keep up with her. Midge slowed down a few times waiting for Snappy to catch up. They rushed across the street and started up the sidewalk. They got to Jake's house first.
