New Year's Eve

Midge ran up to the porch and called for Booker-T. “Hey Booker-T. Where are you?”
I'm right here,” called Booker-T as he came running around from the back yard. “Are you ready to go to Jake's?”
I'm ready,” smiled Midge. “Lets go.”
The two started up the sidewalk and Midge started humming as she hurried along.
What are you humming?” asked Booker-T.
I think my owner called it something like Old Lang Syne,” said Midge.
I think they call it Auld Lang Syne,” said Gabby as he flew down from the tree above.
Maybe that is it,” laughed Midge. “Sounds like Old to me.”
Why do they sing that song at this time of the year?” asked Booker-T.

Christmas Day

The morning light shone through the window and fell across the bed where Midge and her owner slept. The sun rays felt warm as Midge stretched and leaped from the bed to the floor. Soon her owner began to move in the bed.
Good morning Midge,” called her owner as she sat up in the bed and reached out for her robe. “It is Christmas morning, Midge.”
Midge sat near the bed and listened to her talk. She jumped back on the bed and nozzled her owner's arm waiting for her to pat her on the head.
Come on girl,” said her owner as she ran her hand over her head and down her back. “Lets go get you something to eat. I am ready for some coffee.”

The Holiday is Coming

“Jingle bells, jingle bells,” sang Midge as she and Booker-T hurried along the sidewalk on their way to Jake's house. “I don't hear you singing,” said Midge. “Don't you like to sing?”
You don't want to hear me sing,” laughed Booker-T.
Why?” asked Midge. “This is the time of year a lot of people like to sing the festive songs.”
Not me, Midge,” said Booker-T.
I never hear you sing,” said Midge. “Don't you sing when you are happy?”
Oh no,” said Booker-T. “I purr when I am happy.”
I don't know how to purr,” said Midge. “I don't think Jake does either.”
I don't think dogs purr,” said Booker-T. “It is a cat thing.”

Snappy Tries Out the Wagon

“Good morning Snappy,” said Midge as she came into the room and jumped into the chair next to the tank.
Hello Midge,” said her owner as she patted Midge ontop of the head. “How's your little friend this morning?”
Midge tilted her head from side to side as she listened to her owner letting her know she understands what she is saying. She glanced at Snappy in the tank and tapper her foot on the side of the glass. Snappy crawled to the side of the tand and pushed his little nose against the inside of the tank glass. Midge's owner set some fresh food into the tank for Snappy and went to the kitchen.

Hi Gabby,” greeted Jake. “I am on the way to Midge's house. What are you so excited about this morning?”
How do you know I am excited?” smiled Gabby.
You sounded excited when you said 'Hi Jake', replied Jake.
Guess what is happening?” asked Gabby.
I don't know, what is happening that has you so excited?” asked Jake.
There is going to be a bird show at the park tomorrow,” said Gabby.
How do you know?” asked Jake.

Sorry,” said idge. “I didn't hear you. I was in the back room with my owner and she had the music on loud this morning.”
I heard the music out front,” smiled Booker-T. “I guess that's why you didn't hear me.”
She always plays the music when she gets ready for work,” said Midge. “But usually it is not that loud. I don't know why she had it that loud this morning.”

I did,” said Booker-T “And now that I know all is good with my owner and she will be back in a week, I was able to rest good.”
That's good,” smiled Midge. “I knew all was okay. I just felt it was going to be okay.”
You are so smart Midge,” said Booker-T.
No,” said Midge. “I'm not that smart all the time. When my owner is talking, I always listen.”

Okay,” laughed Midge.
They turned the corner and entered the gate at Jake's house. “Hey Jake!” called Booker-T. “Where are you buddy?”
I don't see him on the porch,” said Midge. “I'm going to run to the back and see if he is back there.”
Okay,” agreed Booker-T. “I will wait here and rest while you check.”

Hi Jake,” said Midge looking toward Jake.
What are you doing?” asked Jake. “Are you chasing bugs again?”
No,” said Midge. “I was blowing the dandelion seeds around the yard.”
Why?” asked Jake.
They look sort of pretty as they float along on the breeze,” smiled Midge.
They do look neat as they sail along in the air,” said Jake.

I'm awake,” said Booker-T as he came strolling around the house and joined Midge in the front. “I got up when my owner woke up to get ready for work. You are out early this morning. Your owner hasn't gone to work yet, has she?”
No, not yet,” said Midge. “She is getting ready to go now. I came outside to take care of business after eating my breakfast.”
Come on and lets sit on the bench in the backyard,” said Booker-T. “You can see your driveway from the back so you will see when she leaves.”

Oh hi, Booker-T,” said Midge. “How are you this morning?”
Are you all right?” asked Booker-T. “I was calling to you and you didn't say a word, like you didn't hear me.”
Oh, I'm sorry. Yes I am fine. I think I was daydreaming again,” said Midge. “I just came outside. What are you doing?”
I came to walk with you and thought I might say hello to Snappy before we go,” said Booker-T. “What are you daydreaming about this time?”

Gabby Was Trapped

Midge was skipping along the sidewalk on her way to Jake's house. Booker-T was at Misty's house so Midge was going to meet him at Jake's. The early morning had brought rain so she had to watch out for all the mud puddles along the way. She knew her owner would not be happy with her if she was to come home all muddy.
Hey Midge,” said Gabby swooping down in front of her. “What are you doing this morning?”
I'm on my way to Jake's,” said Midge. “What are you doing? We haven't seen you in a couple of days.”
I know,” said Gabby. “I was visiting a friend and got locked in a shed and couldn't get out til last night. I was trapped inside.”

Hey Midge,” said Booker-T, poking her in the head. “Look over there.”
Midge turned to look in the direction where Booker-T was pointing. She saw a woman dressed it bright red pants and jacket prancing into the ring followed by six cute little poodles all dressed in suits and dresses. “Oh wow!” said Midge. “They are so cute.”
Would you wear one of those dresses?” laughed Jake. “I can see you now all dressed in a pretty pink dress with a pink bow above your ear and a jeweled collar.”
Very funny,” smiled Midge. “I think they are cute but that's not for me.”
But you were wanting to dance before,” said Booker-T.

He had to go to the vet's this morning” said Midge. “He wants us to wait for him. He will come when he and his owner get home.”
Was he sick?” asked Jake jumping down from the swing.
No,” said Midge. “He said it was time for his yearly shots.”
Oh,” sighed Jake. “I think it is almost time for me to go for shots too.”
I don't think I have to go until next month,” said Midge. “I always forget, but owner never forgets.”
Mine don't forget either,” agreed Jake. “She always writes things down in her appointment book.”
Does it hurt when you get your shots?” asked Midge.

No Midge,” said Jake. “But why are you in such a big hurry?”
Hey Midge!” called Booker-T as he strolled up the steps to the porch. “I started to walk over to your house and saw you running up the sidewalk. You forgot me.”
I'm sorry Booker-T,” said Midge. “I was so excited and wasn't thinking this morning.”
Why are you so excited?” asked Jake.

Midge Meets the New Neighbor

Midge started walking along the sidewalk on her way to Jake's house. She saw a huge truck parked in the driveway of the house on the corner of her street. “Wow,” thought Midge. “That is a really big truck.” As she got closer to the house, she saw the name on the side of the truck, 'Baker's Moving'. “Hmmmm, new neighbors moving in, or maybe they are moving out.” She stopped and stared at the big truck for a few minutes and then noticed a tiny dog sitting on the steps of the house. She looked around and didn't see any humans. She slowly walked up the sidewalk to where the little one was sitting.
Hi,” smiled Midge. “I'm Midge.”
Hi Midge,” said the little dog.
Are you moving in?” asked Midge.

Hi Booker-T,” said Midge. “I didn't see you this morning so I started by myself.”
I slept late this morning so I wasn't outside,” said Booker-T. “So who is coming around what mountain?”
It's just a song,” laughed Midge. “I don't know who she is or what mountain she is coming around.”

"Yes," said Jake. "Booker-T and Gabby are coming too."
"Thank you Jake," smiled Midge. "It will be fun. Where are Booker-T and Gabby? They were here."
"They left to check out the convention center and will be back soon. I don't know if we can get you inside," said Jake. "This is not going to be easy."
"I know," said Midge. "Gabby is good at coming up with ideas."
"Yes he is," said Jake. "But you are the best idea thinker around."
"Oh thank you Jake," blushed Midge. "I am pretty good, aren't I"
"Do you have any ideas for getting into the building?" Asked Jake?"

“I think they are going to be there all day,” said Jake. “Did you change your mind?”
“Oh no,” said Midge. “I still want to dance. I didn't know it was going to be there all day. My owner will be going to work late this morning. The insurance man is coming to the house before she goes to work.”

“I heard about it on the TV last night when my owner was watching the show,” said Jake. “It isn't the show that is going to be at the convention center.”
“Yes it is,” said Midge. “I know it is the show.”

Midge Wants to Dance

Booker-T crossed the yard and entered the gate at Midge's house. He stood just inside the gate and saw Midge on the front porch. She didn't see him enter the front yard. Booker-T just stood there watching her acting a little strange. He didn't know whether to call to her or just walk on up to the porch. He slowly started up the sidewalk. Midge looked up and saw him coming up the sidewalk toward the porch. “Hey there Booker-T!” called Midge.
“Hi Midge,” said Booker-T. “What are you doing? Are you all right?”
“I'm great,” said Midge.
“Are you sure you are all right?” asked Booker-T.

“Oh yes,” said Booker-T. “You are like a magpie sometimes, chatter chatter chatter.”
“Ha ha,” said Midge. “You all talk too.”
“I'm kidding you,” laughed Booker-T. “You are always so happy and talking but this morning you haven't said much. Is everything okay Midge?”
“Oh yes,” said Midge. “Everything is great. I just have this song going through my head I heard my owner play last night when her friend came to the house for dinner.”

“I was on the way to Jake's house,” said Midge. “Want to come?”
“Sure,” said Booker-T. “How is Snappy this morning?”
“He is good,” said Midge. “He was eating when I left. Our owner cleaned out his tank last night and gave him fresh water. He just loves his new home and all the fresh water and good food he gets now.”
“That's good,” smiled Booker-T. “I was worried he might be lonely for the pond.”

“I can ask them,” said Midge. “Are you missing being at the pond?”
“No,” said Snappy. “I love my new home here, but I do miss seeing Jake and Booker-T too.”
“I know,” said Midge. “I'm sure they will come to see you. I will ask when I go to Jake's this morning.”

What is a Psychic

Booker-T sat in the kitchen with Midge after drinking the water Midge's owner set down for them.
“How did she know I was here?” asked Booker-T.
“I don't know,” said Midge. “Humans do some things that I don't know how they do it.”
“She does other things too?” asked Booker-T.
“Yes,” smiled Midge. “I've seen her do something else and I don't know how she does it.”
“Like what?” inquired Booker-T.
“Well,” said Midge. “When the phone rings, I've heard her say who was on the phone before she picks it up and she is always right.”
“Oh wow!” smiled Booker-T “That's amazing. Do you think she is psychic?”

“Want to hear the story?” asked Midge.
“Oh yes,” said Snappy climbing on the long and sitting down to listen. “Where are Jake and Booker-T?”
“They were tired after our very busy day,” said Midge. “They went home to rest, but they said they will come by here in the morning.”
“Wow, it really must have been a busy day,” said Snappy. “They don't usually get that tired after a day of fun.”
“We got to the little cafe and there were people everywhere waiting for the alien to come out to see them,” said Midge. “They were lined up on the sidewalk for blocks.”

“Wow Jake,” said Booker-T. “Look at all those people.”
“Sure are a lot of people,” said Midge. “Why are there so many people out here?”
“They are all looking for that free hamburger,” said Jake. “I think people like that free stuff.”
“Isn't that why we are here?” asked Booker-T. “To try and get a free hamburger too.”
“Do you see the alien?” asked Midge.

“Good morning Midge,” said Jake as he watched Midge hurry up the steps to the porch.
“Hi Jake,” smiled Midge.  “What are you doing this morning?”
“Same thing I do every morning,” laughed Jake. “You know me. I love my nap after breakfast.”
“I know,” said Midge.  “You are a dog who loves to nap.  I like to play.”
“I like to play too,” said Jake. “But after breakfast, I like to take a good nap and let my food settle some. Do you want to go to the park this morning?”
“Aren't we going to the hamburger place and see that alien this morning?” asked Midge.  “I want to see what the alien is going to do.”
“We can go see the alien,” said Jake. “I don't think that place opens til later close to lunch,” said Jake.  “Isn't Booker-T coming to see him too?”

"I'm trying to find my dog dish," said Midge.
"Where did you see it last?" asked Jake.
"Next to my dog house in the back yard," said Midge.  "It was there this morning when I ate my breakfast."
"Did your owner pick it up and take it in the house when you finished eating?" asked Jake.
"No, she left for work after she brought it out to me.  I ate my breakfast, turned around and went to the front yard for a minute and when I came back, it was gone," said Midge.

“Come now Jake,” said Midge. “The aliens have landed!”

“Midge,” said Jake. “The last time you thought aliens landed, it was someone flying an air balloon. Is it another big balloon?”

“No Jake,” said Midge. “These are real aliens. I saw them at the store.”

“What were they doing at the store?” asked Jake.

Gabby Enjoys the Outside

"Midge!" called Gabby. "Hey! Where are you?"
Midge came running down the stairs.  "Gabby," said Midge.  "What is going on? Why are you yelling at me?"
"The sun is coming up and I want to go outside," said Gabby.  "Spring is here now I think and time for me to spread my wings and go back outside."
"Okay," said Midge. "Come to the kitchen and sit on the counter.  When my owner comes down to feed me before she goes to work, she will see you here and will open the door to let you out."
"Are you sure that will work?" asked Gabby.
"I think so," said Midge.  "She will know you are better and want to go out."
"I've always been good, remember," laughed Gabby.
"I remember," smiled Midge. "We have til next winter to think of a good way to get you a warm place to stay again."

Spring is on the Way

"Hey there Jake!" called Midge as she came running around the corner and into his front gate. "What are you doing?"

"Slow down Midge," said Jake, just as she came bouncing up the stairs. "I'm not doing anything but laying here on the swing enjoying the morning sun."

"That's great!" smiled Midge. "Don't you love this morning?"

"The sun is good this morning," said Jake. "Why all the excitement?"

"The sun is nice and warm," said Midge. "And the snow is melting. I think the snow is pretty when you are inside the house looking out at it, but it is too cold to be in it and now it is melting away. I'm so happy to see it go. Spring is on the way!"

Midge is Feeling Sad

Midge hurried down the stairs and jumped onto the big chair near the tank where Snappy called home. "Good morning Snappy," smiled Midge.
"Hi Midge," said Snappy. "How are you this morning?"
"It is good today," said Midge. "The sun is out and some of the snow is starting to melt."
"That is good," said Gabby. "Good morning Midge and Snappy."
"Yes," said Midge. "That means that Spring maybe on the way. Won't the warm weather be nice?"
"I will be happy to see Spring come," said Gabby. "It has been a long cold winter this year I think."
"Is your owner going to work today?" asked Snappy. "I would like to see Jake and Booker-T."

Midge in Trouble

The morning sun was coming through the bedroom window and Midge looked up at the clock. It was late and her owner hadn't got up yet for work. Midge nudged her and she rolled over and patted Midge on the head. "Good morning girl," said her owner. "Today I am working here, but I know you are probably hungry."
Midge jumped down from the bed as her owner sat up and grabbed her robe and slippers and went to the shower and dressed in blue jeans and a sweater. She put her warm slippers back on and started down the stairs to the kitchen. "Come on girl," said her owner.

Midge and the Television

Jake and Booker-T had gone for the day and Midge ran around the house checking to make sure they hadn't messed any thing else up. The pantry door was closed with the fallen bag of food laying on the floor inside. Everything seemed to be okay. She was worried about the food bag inside the pantry. But there was nothing she could do to fix the problem. She hoped that her owner would just think the bag fell over on it's own.
"Midge!" called Gabby from the living room. "Midge! Where are you?"

The Spilled Food

Midge was curled up asleep at the foot of the bed when her owner's alarm clock started to ring. She jumped up and stretched and leaped down off the warm bed. Her owner went to the bathroom for shower and dressed in her work clothes. Midge had already gone downstairs and was talking to Gabby and Snappy when she came down the stairs.
"Come on Midge," said her owner. "I'll get you something to eat before I leave this morning. It is very early. You can go lay back down girl if you want."

Midge talks with Snappy and Gabby

Midge came back to the living room after watching Jake and Booker-T walk across the back yard heading for their homes.
"Well, Jake and Booker-T have gone for the day," said Midge.
"I am glad that they came to see us and spend the day," said Gabby.
"Me too," agreed Snappy. "Do you think your owner will know they were here?"
"I don't think so," said Midge. "We didn't mess anything up I don't think."
"Maybe you better run check before she comes in the driveway," said Gabby.
"I think you are right," said Midge. "Will you help me Gabby?"

The Three Friends Search for Food

As the three ran to the kitchen, Midge turned to see where Gabby was.
"Be careful Gabby," said Midge. "Don't fly into the wall above the door."
"Okay Midge," said Gabby. "I remember I am inside and not outside where I can fly high."
"Good," said Jake. "If you hit the wall, you really will be injured."
"This is true," laughed Gabby. "And I know it would hurt a lot."
"Are you sure it would hurt a lot?" asked Booker-T.
"Oh yes," smiled Gabby. "I ran into a window once. It hurt. I fell to the grass and think I saw stars that day."
"You don't want to do that again Gabby," said Jake.

The Friends Spend the Day Together

The three friends entered Midge's house through her little door in the back door. They quickly crossed the kitchen floor to the living room where they found Snappy in the big tank and Gabby was sitting on the edge of the tank.
“Hi guys,” said Midge as she crossed the room.
“Hi Midge,” said Gabby. “Hi Booker-T and Jake. How are you this morning?”
“We are good,” said Jake. “How are you doing?”
“You look like you are enjoying it here,” said Booker-T.
“Oh yes,” said Gabby. “It is really nice in here and Midge's owner is very nice to us. I think Snappy wants to stay here all the time.”
“That would be nice,” said Snappy. “She feeds me nice food. Better than I find at the pond.”

Gabby Whistles a Tune

Midge awoke early and ran down the stairs to check on Gabby and Snappy. She jumped into the big chair and poked her nose over the edge of the tank.
“Hi Snappy,” greeted Midge. “How are you this morning?”
“Hi Midge,” said Snappy. “I am good. I just love the warm water your owner gives me to swim in. It really feels good. I like it here.”
“Me too,” said Gabby as he poked his head out of the basket. “It is so nice of your owner to take care of us for the winter.”
“I know,” said Midge. “She is a good person. You will be here alone when I go to Jake's this morning. Will you be okay til I get back?”

Gabby the Injured

It wasn't long and Midge heard the car drive into the driveway and park near the house. Midge and Gabby hurried to the kitchen where Midge let Gabby out the door to play his part. She ran for the living room when she heard the front door open. Midge greeted her owner at the front door, jumping up and down and wagging her tail, when she stepped into the house.
“Hi girl,” said Midge's owner, as she patted her on the head. “I am happy to see you too. Let me get my coat off and get some hot coffee and I will fix you something to eat.”

Gabby Wants a Favor

The friends were all playing at the pond and Gabby was sitting on a tree limb that was in the pond watching them running around to keep warm. Gabby sat shivering on the limb.
"Gabby," said Midge. "Why don't you come over here by the tree and get warm in these pile of leaves."
"It would be warmer than sitting out there in the pond on that limb," said Booker-T.
"Okay," said Gabby as he flew to the leaves and landed in the middle of them close to the tree.
"Is that better Gabby?" asked Midge.
"It should be a little better," said Jake. "It is out of the wind. The wind is cold."
"Yes," said Gabby. "This is better. Midge, can I ask a favor of you?"
"Sure Gabby," said Midge. "We are friends and you can ask me anything and if I can do it, you know I will."
"Thanks Midge," said Gabby. "You are a good friend. I'm happy we are friends."
"Me too," said Midge.
"We are all good friends," said Jake.
"I agree," said Booker-T. "I never thought I would be friends with a bird and couple of dogs."
"We are different," said Gabby.

Gabby Checks on Snappy

"Good morning Snappy," called Midge as she leaped into the chair beside the tank where Snappy was sleeping.
Poking his little head out of the covered area of the tank, he stretched and greeted Midge. "Good morning Midge."
"Did you sleep good Snappy?" asked Midge.
"It was nice a warm," said Snappy. "I slept all night and wasn't shivering at all last night. This is so nice."
"I'm glad you like it," said Midge. "My owner is a good person."
"I hope when spring comes she will let me go back to the pond in the park," said Snappy. "It is really nice there in the Spring and Summer. The winter's are the bad time."

Midge and Her Idea

“Why don't you follow me home,” suggested Midge. “Maybe if my owner saw you in the yard, she would bring you in and make you a warm place to stay for the winter.”
“Oh that would be nice,” said Snappy. “Do you think she would give me a warm home for the winter. I don't think I would want to be in there in the summer. I like it out here in summer.”
“We can try Snappy,” said Midge. “She is good person for a human.”
“Come on with us,” said Jake. “I'm cold and ready to go home and warm up inside.”
“Me too Jake,” said Midge. “Come on Snappy. We will walk slow so you can keep up with us.”
The three friends started across the park toward the street. Snappy hurried behind Midge and tried to keep up with her. Midge slowed down a few times waiting for Snappy to catch up. They rushed across the street and started up the sidewalk. They got to Jake's house first.
