The Funny Toy

Midge and Booker-T walked along the sidewalk on their way to Jake's house.  Midge started to walk into the street.

“Where are you going?” asked Booker-T.

“I see something laying on that other sidewalk,” said Midge.

  “Another funny animal? Asked Booker-T.

“No,” said Midge.  “It looks shiny.”

The two stood looking at the object and walked around it and Midge reached out and touched it with her foot.

   “What is it?” asked Booker-T.

“I don't know,” said Midge.  “It looks like a bunch of wires.”

“What are wires for?” asked Booker-T.

“I don't know,” said Midge.    “Humans use wires for things.  Maybe it is a spring.”

“What kind of spring?” asked Booker-T.

“I don't know,' said Midge.  “Lets take it to Jake's house.  Maybe he knows what it is.”

Midge grabbed a hold of the spring and picked It up. The other end bounced up and down as Midge walked along the sidewalk.

“What are  you doing with that slinky?” asked Gabby as he flew down to the sidewalk.

“What is a slinky?” asked Booker-T.

“It is what Midge is carrying,” said Gabby.

“What does it do?” asked Midge.  “I found it laying on the sidewalk.”

“It is a toy,” said Gabby.

“It sure is a funny toy,” said Booker-T.

“How do the humans play with a spring?” asked Midge.

   “It walks,” said Gabby.

“It wasn't walking when I found I on the sidewalk,” said Midge.  “It was just laying there doing nothing when I found it.”

“Maybe it was tired,” suggested Booker-T.

“It's a spring,” Laughed Midge. “I don't think it gets tired.”

“How does it walk?” asked Booker-T.  “It don't have any legs.”

“I saw some little humans playing with it,” said Gabby.  “It walked down the stairs.”

“How does it get back up the stairs?” asked Booker-T.

“The humans carry it back up the stairs so it can walk back down,” said Gabby.

“There are some stairs over there on that slide,” said Midge.  “Lets go see if it will walk down them.”

They walked over to the slide and Midge carried the bouncy spring to the top and set it on the top step.  Nothing happened.

“I think it's tired,” said Midge.  “It don't want to walk.”

“Wait,” said Gabby as he flew to the top of the slide.

Gabby landed next to the spring toy and gave it a quick push and the spring started going down the stairs.

   “Hey, it's walking!” shouted Booker-T.

“I think it is just flipping over and over going down the stairs,” said Midge.

When it reached the bottom, it stopped.

   “Do it again,” said Booker-T.

Midge went down the steps and carried this strange toy back up the slide steps.  At the top, she gave it a nudge with her nose so it would flip flop over and over going back down the steps.

“We forgot to go to Jake's house,” said Midge.

“Here he comes now with Lucy,” said Booker-T.

“Hey guys, said Jake.  “What happened to you?”  Lucy and I were waiting and you didn't come. Is everything okay?”

“Well,” said Midge.  “I found this funny toy that didn't want to walk, but Gabby said it only walks downhill and we wanted to try it, so we carried it to the slide steps.”

“Midge thought it was tired and didn't want to walk,” said Booker-T.  “And Gabby said to carry it to the top of the steps.”

“I carried it up the steps and set it down but it didn't want to work.” said Midge.  “Gabby came up and gave it a push with his beak and it started going down the steps flip flopping over and over as it went down the steps.  But it won't walk back up, so I had to carry it back up to the top.  I gave it a little push with my nose and it walked back down again, flipping over and over itself.  Want to see?”

“I want to see it walk,” said Lucy.

“Okay,” said Midge as she carried the spring to the top of the slide steps.  She set it down and gave it a small push.  The spring went down the steps slipping over on each step.

“That's a funny toy,” said Jake.  “I think playing with a ball is more fun.”

'But this toy walks,” said Midge.

“And a ball rolls,” said Lucy.

“You are right,” said Midge. “Lets go find something to do.”    The four left the toy at the bottom of the slide and walked away to find something else to do.
