Midge is Home

Jake turned the corner and slowly walked to the gate to Booker-T's yard. As he went through the gate, Booker-T came running to meet him in the front.
“Hi Jake,” greeted Booker-T.
“Hi Booker-T,” smiled Jake. “Do you know if Midge came home yet?”
“I heard the car over there last night,” said Booker-T. “Lets walk over there and see if she his home. If she is home, the doggie door will be open and we can peak inside if she is not outside.”
“Okay,” agreed Jake.
The two walked to Midge's yard and entered through the gate to the yard. “I think she is here,” said Jake.
“How do you know?” asked Booker-T. “I haven't seen her.”

“The front gate to the yard is open now,” said Jake. “It was closed before, remember.”
“Oh yes,” smiled Booker-T. “She must be there. Lets go see her.”
They ran to the back yard and Jake poked his head through the doggie door and didn't see her in the kitchen.
“Is she is there?” asked Booker-T.
“I don't see her,” said Jake pulling his head out of the door opening. “Lets go inside and see where she is.”
Jake pushed his way through the door and Booker-T followed behind him.. They stood for a moment in the kitchen and didn't hear anything. They went to the living room and saw Snappy in his tank. They ran to the tank the chairs on either side of the tank and leaped into the chair and put their paws on the tank.
“Hi Snappy,” greeted Jake. “What are you doing?”
“Hi you guys,” said Snappy. “I haven't seen you in a long time. I'm happy you came to see me.”
“How are you Snappy?” asked Booker-T.
“It's nice to see you guys too,” said Snappy. “It was really lonely here when Midge and our owner left. She gave me lot of food and cleaned my tank out before they left. When they got home last night, she cleaned out the tank again and gave me some more fresh food. What are you guys doing?”
“We were missing Midge,” said Jake. “We came to see if she was home.”
“You didn't miss me?” asked Snappy.
“Sure,” said Booker-T. “We miss you too when we don't see you.”
“We miss playing with you in the pond at the park,” said Jake. “It isn't the same without you there.”
“I miss you too,” said Snappy. “But I sure like my new home here. It was too cold out there in the winter with all the snow on the ground.”
“It does get cold out there in the winter,” agreed Jake. “Its nice having a warm home to live in.”
“Midge is sleeping late today,” said Snappy. “Our owner left for work about 2 hours ago.”
“Did she have fun wherever they went?” asked Jake.
“We didn't talk yet,” said Snappy. “When they came in late, Midge hurried to the bedroom to sleep.”
“Oh,” said Booker-T. “I wonder how long she is going to sleep.”
“Hi you guys!” shouted Midge as she came running into the room. “I thought I heard your voices out here. At first I thought I was dreaming.”
“Hi Midge,” smiled Jake and Booker-T as they greeted her when she entered the room. “We missed you.”
“Where did you go?” asked Booker-T. “You forgot to tell us you were leaving. We were really worried about what happened.”
“She made a last minute decision to go to the lake with her brother,” said Midge. “I didn't have time to tell you guys. Her brother called around dinner time and asked her to go. He knew she was taking a week off for vacation so asked her to go to the lake with him and his family.”
“Did you have fun?” asked Booker-T.
“It was so much fun,” said Midge. “The lake is really big Jake. We went swimming in the lake and her brother and his wife and my owner went fishing when I was swimming in the lake.”
“Did you have anyone to play with out there?” asked Jake.
“Her nephew was there and he liked to throw and ball so I could run and get it,” said Midge. “I did a lot of running around at the lake.”
“Did you have any animal friends to play with?” asked Booker-T.
“Her brother has a big black lab dog named, Dixon,” said Midge. “He was bigger than Jake.”
“Wow,” said Booker-T. “Jake is big so Dixon must really be big. Does he like to run and play and swim in the water?”
“He has lot of toys to play with too,” said Midge. “He has a box on the porch with a lot of chew toys and squeaky toys and he likes chasing the ball when my owner's nephew throws it. We had lot of fun chasing the ball.”
“Did you see any other animals out there?” asked Jake.
“Oh yes,” smiled Midge. “I saw some squirrels, a raccoon, two other dogs who came to run and play with Dixon and three cats.”
“We missed you Midge,” said Jake.
“I missed you guys too,” said Midge. “I wish you could have come to the lake with me.”
“What else did you do?” asked Booker-T.
“Oh I fell in the water one day,” laughed Midge. “Right off the end of the pier.”
“What is a pier?” asked Booker-T.
“Near the cabin we were at, is a long wood walkway out into the water,” said Midge. “They were sitting on it when they fished. They called it a pier.”
“How did you fall off the pier?” asked Jake.
“We all walked out to the end of the pier and her brother had a basket with lot of stuff in it and he set it down when we got there and pulled out the stuff he called bait and fixed the fishing hooks with the bait for the to toss out into the water to try and catch the fish,” said Midge. “Well, when my owner flipped the fishing line out in the water, I backed up so the hook wouldn't hit me and I tripped on the bait box and off the end of the pier I went into the water.”
“Did you get hurt?” asked Snappy.
“No,” laughed Midge. “I just got really wet and everyone laughed.”
“I'm glad you had fun,” smiled Jake. “But we are happy you are home.”

“Me too,” said Midge.
