What Happened in the Barn

“Hi there guys,” said Betsy as she met the four coming out of the barn. “What are you guys doing?”

“Maybe we should ask what did they do?” said Daisy.  “They came running out of the barn fast.”

“Hi Betsy,” smiled Midge. “We came to the farm to play with Lucy and we wanted to say hi to you while we were here.”

“Lucy is lucky to have you guys as friends,” said Daisy.  “She was lonely till you came to meet her.”

“We are all friends now,” smiled Lucy.

“And probably friends in mischief also,” smiled  Betsy.  “What happened in the barn? Daisy thinks something happened.”

“Nothing,” said Booker-T.  “We were just standing there looking around.”

“One of those pole things jumped off the wall,” sighed Lucy.  “It scared me when it attacked me.”

   “What pole thing?” asked Betsy.

“I think our owner calls them fishing poles,” said Lucy.  “Isn't that what they are Midge?”

“Yes,” that's what they are,” agreed Midge.  “Right Jake?”

   “Yes,” said Jake.

“It just fell off the wall?” asked Daisy.

“Yes,” said Booker-T.  “That's right. We were walking past them and it fell off the wall and fell on Jake's head.”

“Wow,” said Daisy.  “Lets go look at it.  Where is it now/”

“It's laying on the floor,” said Lucy as she stuttered a little.  “And that string stuff came off the round thing.”

“The string is hooked on to something at the top,” said Booker-T.

They walked to the back of the barn where they found the pole laying on the floor and the string in the a tangled mess.  They stood staring at it.

“I wonder how it jumped off the wall,” said Daisy.  “Those other poles look okay.”

“Only that one jumped off the wall,” said Midge.  “And it fell on Jake's head.”

“That's funny,” said Daisy. “I never saw anything just fall off the wall before.  And Lucy said it

jumped off them   wall and attacked her.”

“Do you think our owner will be upset?” asked Lucy.

   “We didn't mean...” said Booker-T.

    “You didn't what?” asked Betsy.

“We didn't know what to do when it jumped of the wall,” said Booker-T.

“You didn't mean to knock it off the wall, did you?” asked Daisy.

“No,” we didn't,” said Midge hanging her head.  “We are sorry.”

“What where you trying to do?” asked Betsy.

“We wanted to go fishing,”  said Lucy.  “So Jake tried to take the pole off the wall, but it got stuck on that hook at the top and the pole fell to the floor and the string unraveled. We really made a mess didn't we?”

“I think so,” said Betsy.  “But he will think it just fell off the wall and he sure can't ask us questions.”

“That's right,” said Jake.  “He won't know we tried to get the pole down.  Dogs don't go fishing with poles.”

   “Cats don't either,” laughed Booker-T.

“Maybe he can fix it,” said Midge.

“I think so,” said Daisy.  “it will be okay.”

“How were you guys going to go fishing with the pole?” asked Betsy.  “That is a human thing they do.”

“Midge and Lucy like to try doing human things,” said Jake.  “They think humans have more fun.”

“Some things you just can't do,” smiled Betsy.  “When little Spike was born, he was like Midge and Lucy.  Wanted to do what the humans did. He always made a mess.  Sometimes he still wants to try.”

“I think going fishing with a pole and string is one of those things we can't do,” laughed Lucy.

“We can still have fun doing something else,” said Midge as they all walked outside.

“Lets all go for a swim in the pond,” suggested Lucy. “It's in the field with the horses and the sun is warm.”

“Maybe when we are swimming we can catch a fish with our paws,” said Jake.

“Very funny,” said Booker-T.  “If one swims up to me, I might grab it.”

“Okay,” smiled Midge.  “Lets go swim with the fishes. I think that's a better idea than trying to catch them.”

“Maybe we can just be friends with the fish,” suggested Booker-T.

“We are friends with a  turtle and a bird,” said Midge.  “Maybe we can be friends with fish too.”

  “Lets go,” said Lucy
