The Spinning Ride

Midge and Booker-T walked along the sidewalk to Jake's house. Midge dragged the little sled behind her. Jake met them as they came through the gate at his house.
“Why are you pulling the sled?” asked Jake. “You aren't going downhill again I hope.”
“She wants to pick up some rocks from the pond for Snappy,” said Booker-T.
“The sled was easier to pull in the snow than the little wagon,” said Midge. “I tried to pull the wagon and I kept getting stuck.”
“It will be hard to find rocks in the snow Midge,” laughed Jake. “Why don't you wait til Spring comes or at least all the snow melts.”
“I didn't think of that,” sighed Midge. “I told Snappy I would get him some new rocks. I guess he will understand if I can't find any in the snow.”

“Sure he will,” said Jake. “Snappy knows how bad the snow gets at the pond.”
“Since we can't find rocks in the snow, maybe I can ride the sled down the hill again, don't you think? “ asked Midge.
“No!” said Jake. “Sled riding is too hard for us. We can't steer it going down the hill. Did you forget going head first into the snow bank when you tried riding it?”
“But it was fun riding it down the hill until I hit the big pile of snow,” said Midge.
“But you can get hurt,” said Booker-T. “I think you should leave the sled at home.”
“Okay,” reluctantly agreed Midge.
“Lets go to the park and run in the snow,” said Jake. “We can watch the kids riding their sleds.”
The three got to the park and saw the kids sliding down the big hill but they weren't on sleds this time.
“What are they doing?” asked Booker-T. “What are they riding on?”
“Oh, those are trash can lids they are sitting on,” said Jake looking closer at what they had.
“That looks like fun Jake,” said Midge. “Ca we get a trash can lid and try it. They don't steer them.”
“Where will we get a trash can lid?” asked Booker-T.
“We don't need one,” said Jake. “Because we aren't going to try it.”
“Sure we are,” smiled Midge. “Maybe we can go home and get the lid from our trash can and drag it over here. I want to ride the trash can lid.”
“Oh boy,” said Jake. “I know you and you won't give up the idea until you try it.”
“You're right Jake,” said Midge.
“Look over there Midge,” said Booker-T. “Someone left a trash can lid leaning up against that tree. Think we can go use it?”
“Lets go get it Jake,” said Midge as she started toward the tree.
They looked around to see if anyone was coming for it. No one came so Jake grabbed the lid and started walking backwards up the hill dragging the lid. At the top of the hill, he dropped the lid where Midge climbed onto the center of the lid.
“Wait Midge,” said Jake. “It's upside down. You are suppose to sit inside the lid.”
Midge stepped off the lid so Jake could turn it over and then she climbed back into it.
“Are you sure you want to try this?” asked Jake. “See that snow bank down there. Maybe you will go into it like before.”
“It will be okay,” said Midge. “I was watching the kids and they went over it on the lids. If I go in again, hurry and pull me out.”
“Booker-T is at the bottom and he is waiting for you to come down,” said Jake.
“Okay Jake,” said Midge. “Push me.”
Jake gave her a push and she started down the hill. Faster and faster the lid went and began to spin around and around on it's way down the hill. Around and around she went, faster and faster. Midge was laughing as she rode it down the hill. When she reached the snow bank the lid seemed to take flight as it sped over the bank and went a little further until it hit a tree. Midge fell off into the snow.
Booker-T ran to her side with Jake hurrying behind. “Are you okay Midge?” asked Jake.
“That was fun,” laughed midge. “But oh I'm dizzy. Did you see me going round and round?”
“You flew over that snow pile too,” laughed Booker-T. “Can I try it this time Jake?”
“Me too,” said Jake as he grabbed the lid in his teeth and started back up the hill with Midge and Booker-T following behind.
At the top of the hill, Booker-T climbed into the lid. “Okay, Push me,” he said.
The lid started down the hill going faster and faster as it went and then it began to spin. About half way down the hill it was spinning so fast that Booker-T flew off and landed in the snow as the lid kept on going til it hit the tree. When Jake and Midge reached him, he was laughing so hard, he could barely talk.
“My turn,” said Jake as he once again ran to get the lid and drag it up the hill. He walked up the hill backwards with Booker-T and Midge following him. At the top of the hill, Jake climbed inside the lid and Midge gave him a push and he began the slid down the hill. The lid went faster and faster and started spinning. Jake was laughing all the way to the bottom of the hill. Up and over the snow pile it went as Jake let out a loud yell and then it hit the tree tossing Jake into the snow. Jake jumped up laughing and shaking off the cold snow.
“Now that was fun,” said Jake. “I think that is more fun than the sleds.”
“Want to do it again?” asked Midge.
“I'm too dizzy right now,” said Jake. “Maybe another day we can try it again. I'm hungry. Lets go home and find something to eat and get some water.”

They left the lid against the tree and started walking home as they laughed about their spinning ride down the hill.
