The Treasure Hunt

Midge was sitting on the porch looking at some kind of drawing he found in her back yard. Booker-T walked over and found her staring at the paper.

Hi Midge,” said Booker-T. “What are you doing?”

I found this in the back yard,” said Midge. “I think the wind blew it there. Do you know what it is?”

Booker-T stared at the paper. “It looks like a map of some kind,” suggested Booker-T. “It looks like some little humans drew it.”

What kind of a map?” asked Midge.

I don't know,” said Booker-T. “I can't read it. What is this big red X on it for?”

Maybe Jake will know what it is,” said Midge.

Is Jake coming here this morning?” asked Booker-T.

Yes,” said Midge. “He can read the words on the paper.”

Here he comes with Lucy,” said Booker-T.

Hey there guys,” said Jake when he came through the front gate. “What are you two guys doing?”

Midge found a map in her back yard,” said Booker-T. “Can you read it?”

Jake sat down looking at the map. “It looks like a little human drew it. My owner's nephew draws like that.”

What is it a map of?” asked Midge.

It says it is a treasure map at the top of the map,” said Jake.

Where?” asked Lucy. “Can we follow the map and find the treasure?”

Lets go on a treasure hunt Jake,” said Midge.

Yes,” said Booker-T. “I want to go too.”

What is that big red X on the map?” asked Booker-T. “Is the map no good?”

I think the X is where the treasure is,” said Jake.

Where is the X?” asked Midge.

Looks like maybe it is near the school,” said Jake. “Do you want to go too, Lucy?”

Yes,” smiled Lucy. “Maybe is a lot of money.”

I don't think money is a good treasure for us,” said Midge.

Why not?” sighed Booker-T.

What would we do with money?” asked Jake. “We can't use it.”

I guess that is right,” sighed Midge. “I wish I was a human.”

No you don't,” laughed Booker-T. “We have more fun then humans have and we don't have to go to work.”

That is true,” smiled Midge. “It would be nice to be a human for one day, don't you think?”

No,” said Jake. “Do you want to try and find the treasure, whatever it is?”

Okay,” said Lucy. “Lets go. Where are we going?”

Looks like the X is behind the school,” said Jake. “Come on and lets go find it.”

The four hurried out the gate and started to hurry along the sidewalk to the school. When they reached the school, they hurried to the back of the school.

So,” said Booker-T. “Where is the red X. I don't see a red X on the ground anywhere.”

I don't think they put the red X on the ground,” said Jake.

How can we find the treasure if they don't have the red X on the ground?” asked Midge. “We can't dig everywhere back here.”

What does this look like to you, Midge?” asked Jake pointing at something drawn on the map.

I don't know,” said Midge. “What does it look like to you Booker-T and Lucy?”

That thing looks like a tree maybe,” said Booker-T pointing at a tree near the playground. “Do you think it is that tree?”

That other thing looks funny,” said Lucy as she looked around the school grounds. “If that is the tree, maybe it's the slide over there.”

Maybe that is what it is,” said Jake looking at the map and then looking at the slide on the playground. “But how do we know where to dig near the slide.”

I don't know,” said Midge as she walked toward the slide. “Lets go start digging holes.”

The others followed Midge to the slide and stood staring at the ground near the slide.

Where should we start?” asked Lucy looking around. “Do you see anything?”

No,” said Jake.

Hey Midge,” called Booker-T standing near the tree. “Look over here.”

What did you find?” asked Jake as they walked to where Booker-T was standing.

See that stick in the ground near the tree?” said Booker-T. “Maybe we should start digging there.”

The four started to dig and as they dug, the hole got deeper and deeper.

Hey what is this?” asked Lucy.

Pull it out of the hole,” said Midge. “I want to see.”

Lucy pulled the object hard and dragged it out of the hole.

What does it look like?” asked Midge.

It's a red ball,” said Jake.

We did all that digging for a ball,” sighed Lucy.

I think we did,” said Midge. “I think the ball was important to a little human.”

The treasure of a little human,” laughed Jake. “The human made a map to find a ball.”

What is that on the ground by the swing?” asked Booker-T.

Midge walked over to the object and looked. “It looks like a toy truck.”

Lets put it into the hole and bury it with the ball,” suggested Lucy.

Okay,” said Booker-T as he picked up the truck and carried it to the hole. They placed it into the hole with the ball and they all worked to put the dirt back into the hole. They laid the paper on top of the dirt and started to walk home to Midge's house to get some water to drink and take a nap.
