The Missing Wagon

Hey Midge!” called Booker-T as he ran into Midge's yard and around to the back door where he crawled into the house through the doggie door. “Where are you?”

Hi there Booker-T,” smiled Midge as she entered the kitchen. “What are you doing?”

I came to see what you are going,” said Booker-T. “What are we going to do today?”

Well,” said Midge, ”I don't know. Think we need to ask Jake what he wants to do and maybe Lucy.”

You don't have an idea!” said Booker-T. “Wow, Midge don't have an idea yet.”

Ha ha, Booker-T,” smiled Midge. “I just hadn't thought about it yet. I think we should go have fun.”

Fun, doing what?” asked Booker-T.

I don't know,” said Midge. “Lets go see Jake. Lucy will be at his house.”

We can't ride the sled down the hill yet,” said Booker-T. “No snow yet.”

Maybe we can ride the wagon down the hill,” suggested Midge.

Will the wagon go down the hill?” asked Booker-T.

It has wheels on it,” said Midge. “I think it will go down the hill okay.”

That will be fun,” said Booker-T. “Lets get the wagon and go to Jake's house.”

They went out the doggie door and Midge looked for the wagon in the back yard and couldn't find it.

Where is the wagon?” asked Booker-T.

I don't know,” said Midge looking everywhere in the back yard. “I don't see it.”

Did your owner put it in the basement?” asked Booker-T.

Maybe,” said Midge. “Wait here and I will run in the house and go look in the basement.”

Booker-T ran around the house and sat on the front porch while Midge went inside to search for the wagon. He waited and waited and Midge didn't come back. Jake and Lucy came through the front gate and joined Booker-T on the porch.

Hey Jake!” said Booker-T. “Hi Lucy.”

Where is Midge?” asked Jake.

I don't know,” said Booker-T.

You haven't seen her this morning?” asked Lucy.

I saw her,” said Booker-T.

Where did she go?” asked Jake as he started to go around the house. “Lets go in the house and find her.”

Lucy and Booker-T followed behind Jake as he entered the house through the doggie door.

Hey Midge!” called Jake as he entered the kitchen. “Where are you? We are all here!”

She was going to go into the basement,” said Booker-T.

Hey!” called Midge. “Jake! Is that you up there?”

Where are you?” called Lucy.

Down in the basement,” said Midge. “Jake, can you turn the doorknob on the basement door? It's dark down here.”

Jake grabbed the knob with his mouth and turned his head to open the door. He used his paw to push the door open and Midge came running into the kitchen.

What are you doing in the basement?” asked Lucy. “How did you get down there?”

I went down to the basement to look for the wagon,” said Midge.

Why did you shut the door?” asked Booker-T.

I didn't,” sighed Midge. “It went shut by itself and I couldn't open it.”

Did you find the wagon?” asked Booker-T.

No,” said Midge. “When the door shut, the light went out and it's dark down there.”

I will hold the door open so you can go down to look,” said Jake.

We will help you,” said Lucy as she and Booker-T followed Midge down the stairs while Jake stood near the door so it wouldn't shut. As he stood holding the door, he could hear the others banging around in the basement.

Did you find it?” called Jake.

No!” shouted Midge.

Maybe your owner sent the wagon to her brother's house,” suggested Jake. “Doesn't the wagon belong to her nephew?”

Midge walked to the bottom of the stairs and stared up at Jake. “I didn't think of that. He was here last week but I don't know if he took the little wagon home with him or not.”

Maybe he did,” said Jake. “Why did you want the wagon?”

I wanted to ride it down the hill like a sled,” said Midge. “Come on Lucy and Booker-T. Lets go back upstairs. I think the wagon is not here.”

The three ran up the stairs and into the kitchen and Jake let the door close.

No wagon,” sighed Midge. “So what do you want to do today?”

You don't have an idea?” asked Lucy.

No,” said Midge shaking her head. “Do you have an idea?”

Lets go ride the train around the park,” suggested Booker-T. “Maybe there will be something at the park we can do.”

Okay,” said Jake. “Come on Midge, lets go ride the train. You like to do that.”

Okay,” agreed Midge. “My brain is thinking so maybe I will think of something before we get to the park.”

The three walked along the sidewalk on their way to the park. When they got to the corner where they will cross the street, they stopped to look both ways to be sure it was safe to cross.

Hey Jake!” said Midge. “Look over there! What are all those people doing?”

I don't know,” said Jake.

Lets go see!” said Lucy as they started to cross the street.

They ran across the park to where all the people were standing around.

When they got them, they squeezed through the crowd of people and found some little humans playing a small game of baseball.

Isn't that cute,” smiled Midge. “They are little humans playing ball. Oh oh, that one is running the wrong way. Funny.”

They stood and watched for a little while and then ran to the train to ride it around the park.
