Digging the Pond

“Hey Midge!” called Jake as he came running through the gate. “Where are you?”
“Good morning Jake,” smiled Midge. “You are early this morning. Booker-T and I were going to come to your house soon.”
“I know,” said Jake. “My owner left for work early this morning so I came over here.”
“It's good to see you early,” said Midge. “My owner hasn't left yet to go to work.”
“I see the car,” said Jake. “Do you think she will care if I am over here with you?”
“Oh no,” said Midge. “But when she comes out the door, hide by the tree over there.”
“You want me to hide?” asked Jake. “Why?”

“I don't know,” said Midge. “I just thought it would be a good idea.”
“I will just sit on the front porch okay,” said Jake. “You can sit with me.”
“Okay,” said Midge as she sat down with Jake.
Midge's owner came out the front door to go to her car. She patted Midge on the head, “Be good girl,” said her owner as she then turned to pat Jake on the head. “Hello there.”
“See there,” smiled Jake. “She likes me.”
“She is nice,” said Midge. “We always go to each other's houses after our owners have gone to work so I didn't know if she would like another animal here.”
“I thought it would be okay,” said Jake. “My owner is like that too. She is nice.”
“Here comes Booker-T,” said Midge.
“Hi guys,” greeted Booker-T as he came through the gate. “You are here early Jake. Midge and I were coming to your house.”
“Midge said that when I got here,” laughed Jake.
“Why are you early?” asked Booker-T. “Is everything fine at home?”
“My owner went to work early today and I was lonely,” said Jake.
“Oh,” sighed Midge. “We are happy you came here. Anytime you feel lonely, you can come to see us. Snappy is always happy to see you too.”
“I know,” said Jake. “Okay, tell me what happened.”
“What happened with what?” asked Midge.
“Did you leave that page open to the pretty pond so your owner could see it?” asked Jake.
“Yes,” said Midge.
“What did she do?” asked Jake.
“She closed the magazine and put it on the table,” said Midge. “She didn't look at it.”
“Well, you tried,” said Booker-T. “Maybe she will sit down and look through the magazine and see it.”
“Maybe,” sighed Midge. “I hope so. It would be nice to have a small pond in the yard.”
“Start thinking Midge,” said Jake. “You always think of things.”
“But I can't make a pond,” said Midge.
“Do you have an idea to get her to see what you want in the yard?” asked Booker-T. “You always have ideas.”
“Maybe my idea thinker isn't working,” said Midge.
“Not you Midge,” laughed Booker-T. “You can think of something. You are good at it.”
“Sure Midge,” said Jake. “We know you can do it.”
“Maybe I can think of something,” smiled Midge as she sat back down and started staring into space.
The three sat there a while, just staring into space and then at each other and smiling. No one said a word for about 10 minutes. Then suddenly Midge broke the silence.
“I have an idea!” shouted Midge.
“What is it?” asked Jake all excited that Midge had come up with a plan.
“Tell us, tell us!” said Booker-T. “We want to know.”
“We can start digging the pond,” smiled Midge.
“What!” exclaimed Jake. “We are going to dig the pond?”
“Sure,” said Midge. “We can dig good holes.”
“Won't your owner get angry if we dig a hole in her yard?” asked Jake.
“Sure,” said Midge. “She will get angry at first.”
“I think she will be angry all the time,” said Booker-T. “Do you have a better idea than that?”
“No,” said Midge. “This will be a good idea.”
“How will it be good if your owner comes home and there is a hole dug in her yard by us?” asked Jake.
“We won't dig a lot of it,” said Midge. “She will get someone to finish it for us.”
“And how are you going to get her to finish digging it for us?” asked Jake.
“This should be good,” smiled Booker-T. “What are you going to do?”
“Okay,” said Midge. “Sit down and I will tell you.”
“We are sitting down,” laughed Jake.
“Oh, that's right,” said Midge. “You are sitting down.”
“Okay,” said Booker-T. “Now, tell us what your plan is.”
“We will start digging a hole where we want the pond to be,” said Midge. “I will bring the magazine with the pond out here and open to the pond and leave it beside the hole.”
“Do you think she will know that the hole is for that pond in the magazine?” asked Jake.
“I think so,” said Midge. “She is smart. I hope she will know.”
“Maybe it can work,” said Booker-T. “Where do we want the pond?”
“Do you think over there in the front on that side of the sidewalk,” said Midge pointing to the right.
“That looks like a good place to put the pond,” agreed Jake. “Are we ready to start digging?”
“I'm ready,” said Midge. “lets start digging.”
“Are you sure this will work?” asked Booker-T sounding a little unsure this idea will work.
“I'm sure,” said Midge. “Come on, we want a pond, don't we?”
“I do,” said Jake. “What about you Booker-T.”
“Okay,” said Booker-T. “We will start digging, if you are really positive.”
“I'm positive,” said Midge as she started walking to the spot in the yard and started digging.
Jake and Booker-T joined her and started digging with Midge.
The dirt and grass were flying as they hurried to dig the hole.
